Agreed, the Bing maps are crap in comparison to Google maps, they maybe slightly faster to load but way less detail, can't zoom in as far especially on trail, are way outdated especially here in Aus, I'll certainly be dropping Garmin Connect from my tools list if Garmin persists in using them.

Maybe that is the underlying agenda to drop GC users to free up disk space ?

Yeah.....it must be that. It's Garmin's super secret, dark, devious plan. I'll bet the Illuminati are in on it, too.

Seriously are the Bing maps half reasonable in the US or something ?
I thought there would be many more complaints by now with the dropping of Google maps ?

Bing Maps just hired the creator of OpenStreetMap.

I think we can expect some huge changes to happen at Bing maps, I'm guessing that all the hiking trails on OSM will end up on Bing.

    Why bing maps?

I like my garmin edge 500 and i use it for mountainbiking, hiking and skitouring...
Still they change to bing maps, i have NO maps any more.
    Thats realy just MAD!!!
Where is the advantage of Bing MAPS? Normaly when a company change something there is some advantage and at least, it should have the same functionality as before!!!

    Any good alternative programs?

BING maps are primitive and completely updated in my country. A huge step back for Garmin. Let´s unite and ask for google maps back!!!
    Garmin, you are killing GarminConnect!!!
  • Bing doesn't cut it in Australia!

I've just uploaded data to GC after a few weeks absence and I've found it's now using Bing. I tried to put aside my loathing of all things Microsoft and make use of it. But it's maps are terrible! As an example, the town of Eildon in North East Victoria, Australia, the satellite zoom quality of the maps is very poor - blurred and unfocused, and does not go into the same detail. Further it would appear to mark the town of Elidon in the wrong location. Search it in both Bing and Google and see for yourself.

I realise, this is most likely Microsoft doing it's usual tricks of paying people to use its products (who would use them otherwise) and there is some kickback to Garmin to use Bing over anything else, but really Garmin, if you want happy customers we need decent maps not the current rubbish!

At the very least, could you make it a display setting so you can choose which product (Google or Bing, or anything else for that matter), is used to render a map. To be clear, this should be implemented differently from how the metric imperial units are selected: that always defaults to imperial measurements and will only use metric when you tell it to. In this case, I want to be able to specify what the mapping tool is used by default, if the people I share my route with want to see it with some other rendering engine (Bing vs Google), they can change themselves.

    Terrible!!!!

I have always used GC to help chart the mountains in North Georgia and now with BING I can't see near the level of details that I need!!!

Are there other options out there besides GC? Wow...this is bad.
