Change to Bing maps disappointing

Former Member
Former Member
Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

I think by the time Bing becomes a better product, our Garmin devices will be outdated, and we will have moved on to a company that actually cares about having the best possible product.

    Bing Maps are Garbage!

Loved the connect feature up until now. Bing maps are TERRIBLE! Detail is PATHETIC! What are you thinking Garmin!? Whoever thought this was a good idea obviously is clueless when it comes to your customer base.

Please listen to the people of this forum & switch back to google maps! Ugh...

Agreed. I liked the connect site up until it started using Bing Maps.

Bing is substandard to Google Maps.

I will start looking at other application options.

WTF?? I haven't used my 705 for a while and I uploaded an exercise today. I actually thought it was a bug in GC because the view was just terrible.

I was about to purchase a Forerunner, but now I'm considering getting a Polar instead.

Please give us Google maps back!

In the meantime, I’ve talked with the folks at Garmin regarding it, and you should see something in the morning from them posted publically. I’ll be following up a bit later on with my thoughts based on their public response, probably on Thursday.

    Here's another site to use:

    http://buckeyeoutdoors.com/training/login

Uses Google Maps and syncs directly from Garmin units.

    Dear Garmin
Thank you for listening. The addition of satellite and hybrid views is a welcome enhancement :) to the dismal bing maps view in Garmin Connect.
Unfortunately, the fundamental problem remains: Bing maps contain very little information - in my case, none of the footpaths and trails shown clearly and accurately on Google Maps and OpenMaps in my area appear on Bing maps. To make things worse, the only road that Bing maps shows in the area where I run is wildly inaccurate, so bad in fact that I thought it a figment of some bing imagination.
Sorry, not good enough, and it won't be until bing maps are complete and accurate. Does Microsoft care?:(

Colin, above, correctly states the main issue.

    Quoted from the blog:
"...we realize that there have been many negative experiences in the process, especially for users in specific areas."

"Specific areas" actually are most of the world outside of the United States when speaking to Bing maps. Singapore, Australia? Pretty important, developed countries for most (with Garmin users too), but unavailable or unreliable in the Bing environment.

If MS has Garmin in a sling, I'd at least try to make Google maps a user defined choice. It would be best for your global user community, and might appease the Beast in Redmond.
