Change to Bing maps disappointing

Former Member
Former Member
Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

    BING map SUCKS!!!

After i bought my edge 800 and upload my first ride i realize that bing maps was add instead of google... big but i mean BIG disappointment because where i live (Chile, South America) Bing has 0 but 0 coverage or details so therefore it's useless for me. In the other hand Google Maps has 100% and detailed coverage with right streets names topo etc. said that i start to look for a different solutions to be able to analyze my rides. nothing come up like Garmin Connect (player, detailed data, calendar etc) until today that i found ridewithGPS.com i upload a couple of rides and Boom!!! i for me solves the problem...better player than Garmin Connect and lets me analyze everything i want. the player it's the eye catching feature, plays everything even your stops, and can be analyze side by side with a graphic that show your cadence, HR, speed and elevation....even you can switch to 3D map...WOW!!! and finally it syncs flawlessly with my edge 800.

As a result i will use Garmin Connect to share with friends my activities and to analyze i will use ridewithGPS

i hope 1 day Garmin realize their mistake and go back to Google Maps

    I like Google Maps better

I was really excited to buy the 705 but one of the features I was really excited was being able to export to Google Earth. I am not really sure why Bing was determined to be more competitive than Google. Perhaps I am missing something?

The map resolution doesn't appear to be as good as with Google maps... maybe there is a setting that I shouldn't need to adjust but I do?

A selling point for my 405 was seeing my friend map all of his rides on Google earth.

Is there an interface that Microsoft makes for free that is better than Google earth that I don't know about?

    I found this fix...

Has anyone used this and had luck?

It claims to fix the Bing problem.

In Garmin Connect, just above the map, there is a button to click which allows one to view the activity in Google Earth.

    Garmin Mafia

    Hello Garmin Mafia,

8-9 months ago I did my daily trips into the woods of my local area here in Norway. When I got to a computer I uploaded the data and Google Maps showed me everything, closeup maps, closeup satellite, terrain and pictures placed around that area. Even Google Earth was embedded into the view.

The week following, Garmin had fired the whole programming team (And all the motionbased people) and hired somebody new. Gamin dropped off Google Maps and converted to Microsoft Bing. And that is when this thread was started. Garmin stay silent like a $cientology-cult/mafia like way and never adresses why or answers any questions.

The next few months Garmin Connect is unstable as a broken car and people complain and complain. But Garmin never replies. Their marked department thinks we, the customers, dont deserve an answer. Thank you Garmin. Times goes on and now I am on the 8-9th month without any visual maps or satellite content of my local area on Gamin Connect, and is totally worthless in sharing any trip information with people on sites like facebook. This is not what I paid for when I upgraded from a 405 to the 310XT. And here is the catch...

Now I need to get a new watch, will Garmin please tell when Garmin Connect gets Satellite/Terrain/Earth/Birds'Eyes coverage of my local area?

    Probebly not.....

...if not I wont be buying from the Garmin Mafia again, even if I have to go to Polar. I recommend everyone else to do the same. The RCX5 model looks solid. It havent got the map/satellite features that I am looking for (So I need to use other services), but neither does Garmin. Since Garmin has stolen from me in the past 8 months, they wont get any more money from me before they fix Garmin Connect.

Frustrated and fooled Garmin Mafia customer...
  • I was using Wikiloc for track uploading, and I began using Garmin Connect for the added track summaries and data in Elevation, Timing, Speed, Heart Rate (since I am using the heart rate monitor with a Oregon 300) however in my country, bing maps coverage is very poor. It doesnt make much sense to have a Google Earth button and not offer Google Maps. Not everyone is going to install the program, and having so low map detail takes so much away from the map pane.

According to Bing, our boat should've run aground several times on this recent whitewater rafting trip on the Ottawa River.

    Sigh.
