Change to Bing maps disappointing

Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

Chris
  • Garmin, hello... are you there? Business lesson #1 listen to your customer. Does this shot of Bing vs Google tell you anything?

Please tell us all what the BIG attraction is for you to run an inferior map product as a MAP COMPANY, is it money, private relationship with Billy boy Gates or what?? Thousands of those who pay your salaries are saying you have downgraded the value of your product.

Not sure these images work but notice the lack of any relevant detail at all on the BING map? Notice that in Mac firefox you can't even see any of the navigation panels on the Bing map? All of this was fine until you downgraded the whole Garmin running experience.

Please, please dump the folks in Seattle and bring us back to what your paying customers are asking you to do.

How-to for Firefox and Chrome: http://blodsmak.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/garmin-connect-bing-maps-and-google-maps/

Thank you. This worked great on Firefox/XP. Now to try the other solution on Chrome/OSX.

    Cheers.
  • I'd just like to add my vote for going back to Google Maps.
  • Google better

But bird's eye view in Bing isnt bad, at least not in NE.

Unfortunately thoroughly offset by non-existent terrain view.

Ran Central Park recently. Sure felt like a darn hill at the top of the park, but I guess there wasn't, 'cause the great Bing maps app says there ain't one there....

    35,000+ views on this thread.

The people making decisions at Garmin suck.

Has anyone from Garmin actually looked or commented in this thread?
35 pages and no response at all?
Not even a courtesy "Thanks for discussing this".

Way to run your product management team, Garmin, bravo.
This is a great example of why you are a poor comparison to Runkeeper (and probably others).

Runkeeper does not make GPS devices. Garmin does.

Runkeeper charges a monthly fee. Garmin Connect does not.

I'm not sure what your point is, sir or madam, but I'll bite:

Runkeeper does not make GPS devices. Garmin does.

Factually correct but what point are you trying to make? Are you saying that GPS manufacturers have a right to have a shoddy approach to customer feedback and interaction?

Runkeeper charges a monthly fee. Garmin Connect does not.

Partially incorrect, Runkeeper basic is free and at a minimum is comparable to Garmin Connect. There is a paid 'Elite' version for something like $20.
They are also a lot smaller than Garmin in terms of man power yet, still are able to manage and respond to their user base.

Also, you missed off the "(and probably others)" from my comment, fancy throwing some loosely related comments about Nike+ and Adidas miCoach in?

Again, I'm not sure what point you were making so perhaps you can clarify?

    thx

Garmin is a better company than that!!

I agree; garmin's pairing with bing is horrible. I no longer recommend this GPS to my friends because of the pathetic excuse of a map that Garmin Connect now displays. At the locations I ride, Bing isn't just subpar; is simply useless to review my ride. Google maps is the gold standard.

Shame on Garmin for not switching back.

    Disappointed

It is sad that Garmin would use Bing instead of the far superior Google Maps. Bing is okay in some cities, but terrible when it comes to the rest of the world, and worst when it comes to the countryside... which is where one needs a GPS most!!!!! Please switch back. This is terrible!!!
