Change to Bing maps disappointing

Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

Yah! Not under the impressed column

Bing is a knock off. Plain and simple. It's like going to Tijuana to get Oakleys from street vendors. Don't get me wrong - for the price the product is right. But I payed for a Garmin, not a knock off. Bring Google Maps back!

The sad part for me is that I am in the market for a GPS running watch and Garmin is doing everything possible to deter me from investing on their platform.

Why on earth isn't there a competitor that we could all switch to? Clearly Garmin management is lacking the strategy/vision ...
  • A few have commented that Connect is a free service and to get over it. That may be, but I specifically bought my replacement Garmin due to the fact that someone showed me how awesome Connect was, now its just garbage, maps don't even show up half the time, most of the areas I run and bike in don't exist on Bing maps, it just sucks. So honestly I feel cheated out of my money for buying my garmin earlier this year...

So free or not, as far as I was concerned it was what made my Garmin purchase worth it for me... now its just a expensive watch. I rarely look at it on my wrist while I run, but I loved analyzing the maps and graphs later. But they don't even show up on my newer Windows 7 machine, If I want to see anything at all, I have to use an old POS PC I have in the basement with XP on it.

    Bring back Google maps!

Up to this point, I have been thrilled with my Forerunner 305 and the Garmin Connect website. But this recent change to Bing is just plain awful. Bing? Really? Please bring back Google maps. Garmin, please listen to the people who buy your products - seems like the feedback on the switch to Bing is pretty clear. Don't offer us talking points - offer us what we're looking for - the return of Google maps.

    Why change???????
Have been using GC and RunningAhead side by side for several months now, but if you stick with Bing maps, or the quality doesn't improve then it will just be RunningAhead.
  • Why change???????

Garmin will give their blah blah industry leaders non-answer, but I'll wager a guess that Microsoft actually paid them to switch. Microsoft is very heavily pushing Bing and there can't really be any other reason to risk losing customers than lots of money.

I think bing is bad too, but how exactly does garmin lose money if we don't use this free sight? they make their money selling gps devices, not web pages. that being the case, they have nothing to lose if bung is cheaper than google.

  • Garmin connect is a part of the GPS device package. At least Garmin markets it as such. It's specifically mentioned as a feature of my 310XT.

Making the software bad has a significant impact on the usefulness of the device and it certainly has made me reconsider purchases. Was in the market for a new weight and originally wanted a Tanita BC-1000. I ended up ordering a Withings weight and will be using it with trainingpeaks.com as a direct result of GC changing to Bing. This time it wasn't a Garmin device that wasn't sold but a partners, but Garmin's clear disregard for the customer, will certainly make me consider other GPS manufacturers when it's time to retire my 310XT.
