Change to Bing maps disappointing

Former Member
Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

    Runningahead.com

Dear Garmin Connect haters, please try runningahead.com. Automatic upload through Garmin ANT agent and you will have your Google maps back, plus all the other functionalities. Forget about Garmin Connect and move on, while our next GPS tool will be of another brand!

    Why ?

Why switch to Bing ? Maps are less readable, the terrain view is gone, the Earth view is gone... Thank you for downgrading a feature.

    Switching back to Google Maps

Any news as to WHEN (and not IF) Garmin is going to switch back to Google maps???

I wonder which executive's head at Garmin will fall over this ridiculous decision!

On the other hand I don't mind that much because it makes all that more certain that another company is going to appear and eat Garmin's lunch!

This is how free markets operate; Garmin you just signed your ...
  • Please go back to Google Maps

    Where's the terrain function?

That was the best part of Garmin Connect. I'll have to find something else to use.

Yet another user disappointed by the move to Bing.

For mountain biking in the Alberta rockies I loved having the Google Terrain maps to see my tracks. Now my choices are a road map (not so helpful when you aren't on a road) or a very low resolution aerial view. Seriously? You've essentially made GC useless for anyone that doesn't spend all their time in a major city.

I just bought a 310xt a couple of months ago and I too am disappointed with the change to Bing maps. Google maps was much more accurate in my area.

    Alternative to Garmin Connect

All of you who are upset with Garmin Connect's switch to Bing should check out the following site. Membership is free and it works with your Garmin. I've had the best luck exporting my ride data in TCX format from the Garmin Training Center software and then upload the file to the site, but the site also says it will work directly with your device.

    http://ridewithgps.com

I especially like how the RideWithGPS site will let you calculate your average speed for an arbitrary section of your ride.
