Change to Bing maps disappointing

Former Member
Former Member
Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

    Google maps please

Please bring back google maps. Bing does not provide the detail that I am looking for on runs and rides in the woods.

Google was great. Please bring it back. Give users the option.

Going to Bing (unannounced?) makes no sense.

Is there a phone number to call to speak to someone about this issue?

  • Bing maps underwhelming!

I completely agree with the other complaints about the switch to Bing maps from Google Maps. There is zero detail! With Google Maps I could see street addresses and clear landmarks wherever I ran. With Bing I can't even see the names of the streets in some of more exotic locals I run (Thailand, Pakistan) which makes the utility of the map syncing function next to nil. Please please please switch back to Google Maps.

    switched to breadcrumbs

    I switched to Breadcrumbs http://www.gobreadcrumbs.com
they use Google Earth and Google Maps, which are way better than Bing maps. You don't get as much statistics but they are great for logging your trips with combining photos and videos and let you share them.

Sorry Garmin, but this is awful. One of the best features of Garmin Connect has, in one swoop, become one of the lousiest. And as for the celebrated collaboration with Microsoft. Hell, Google are pretty much at the forefront when it comes to developing innovative web-based applications. Microsoft are just corporately pedestrian.

Disappointed just doesn't cover it... :(
  • I dont know elsewhere in the world but bing maps have wery low detail in the maps...
    Disapointed.

    Jumping Ship

Well, having read through all of the posts on this thread, I've set up an account on runkeeper.com and I intend to use that - seems to do pretty much all that GC does, but uses good old Google Maps (plus the option to use Bing so that I can occasionally remind myself why I switched!) and also an Android version for my phone. Lovely...

    Bye bye GC, your loss!

    adding to the chorus

terrible move to Bing, one of the reasons 3 friends bought and/or changed to Garmin (from Nike Ipod and Adidas miCoach) was when I showed them my Garmin Connect Google maps. We all paid more for a great product then get a downgrade like this, not consistent with how Garmin promotes and manages their brand.

Agree with others posting that once outside US/Can and other countries Bing maps are completely useless. Mine now do not even show any roads or points, no towns just a stupid red line on an empty yellow map.

Change this or lose customers and customer respect. Its marketing and customer management 101.

WTF?! Switch to inferior Microsoft maps is LAME

I assume Microsoft made a compelling case to Garmin to convince them to make this move, despite the fact that it does a real disservice to Garmin's customers.

Until this, I'd been a completely happy customer, and loved the workout-to-web ecosystem Garmin had provided. I'm no longer a happy customer; I'm actively looking for alternatives, will be vocal in my dissatisfaction to others who ask my opinion, and will gratefully migrate to a well-designed alternative using Google's superior maps when it inevitably becomes available.

The change to Bing maps is a total disaster

The change to Bing maps is a total disaster. In norway, the maps are so bad that it is useless information to see the map. There are no details in the terrein and impossible to si even small roads. the zoom function is really bad and the map even worse. I hope you will change back to google otherwise is one of the main arguments for buying a garmin gone. Changing to Bing maps may be a cheaper solution for you today ( and it should be, because it sucks ), but in the long term I am pretty sure you will regret this.

    Best regards
a very disapointed garmin lover, who for the first time is thinking about buying something else than garmin due to the bing maps
