Change to Bing maps disappointing

Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

  • Here's my Abu Dhabi Half Marathon - using the "hybrid" style. Is this a step forward Garmin?

Here's Google Maps (via Runkeeper) - same map style - you be the judge...

    Useless Maps

    Another highly angry Gamin user.

Love Gamin Connect, love my 305.... all was going well. I even bought three more to give to friends. Now you change to Bing Map and it all falls apart. Useless map, no satelitte imagery for my area of Canada at any useable resolution.

Why the change?!? Why make such a retrograde move.

You are going to loose customers by the bucket.

Go back to Google Maps - and soon.

I have a 310xt with heart rate monitor and foot pod and I am so disapointed at the change of Bing Maps - I actually joined this forum simply to voice my displeasure,
I get large grey blocks over my maps and the quality is not acceptable, for the price I paid for my garmin I expect better or at least a choice.

I have also used the support form to contact garmin support to ask why I have grey areas over my maps which I did not have before. I believe this is a legitimate technical issue as before it was not being experienced.

I would also suggest that anyone who has a technical issue reports it, at least of the maps are not replaced the issues are resolved.

Overall though im not happy at this moment :(
Why was the maps changed, its not as if you get better functionality now - or even equal functionality at this time.

There is even a thread which contains unhapppy people on runnersworld forums discussing this change.

One of the reasons I went with Garmin was because they used Google maps in GC...now after only 2 weeks of using my Edge 500 I find that they have switched to Bing maps.

I hope Garmin seriously takes on board what their customers are saying and provides us with a solution such as reverting back to using google maps or giving us a choice however as the move was probably financially driven I doubt this will happen....

    Poor effort Garmin.
    Another dissapointed customer.

Eh garmin. High quality products but this??
  • Yesterday I cycled on Seletar North Link here in Singapore, including three bridges - which according to Bing do not even exist!! If you want to see the road & bridges, do a search in Google Maps!

The sad proof can be seen on the attachment.

Singapore on bing maps is full of mistakes. My whole area is wrong, and it's not even a new area!

Vietnam where I previously lived is effectively missing from bing, but has great community built maps on Google:

The rest of the developed world is generally noticeably worse on bing than Google maps. Nothing as obvious as the Vietnam/India/Philipines/etc pics that everyone are posting from developing countries (which I like to cycle in), but just as irritating missing/incorrect roads, poor satellite imagery, etc. I'm yet to see ANYTHING at all positive about this move.

This is really disappointing. Looking at alternatives. Garmin must have got a lot of MS$$$ for this. I suspect it was part of some license agreement for a Garmin Windows 7 phone.....
  • If you dislike bing complete this

So they REALLY get the message we must make noise. Garmin WE ARE NOT HAPPY. DO YOU GET IT.
Great move ...... make change on weekend. No contact on phone , no email support, we are not happy, we won't give up. Give us back what we paid for. Yes WE PAID FOR A GOOD PRODUCT. GIVE IT BACK. Ripped off.

Although I agree with the sentiments regarding the maps, I certainly did not pay for Garmin Connect. Sure it comes as a free service with the device, but it does not affect the utility of the device.

As far as post processing options go, Garmin Connect is actually quite poor when compared to other alternatives, both free and paid. By all means complain, but there are other better options available which give you much more.
  • I'm not sure whether anyone at Garmin is ever reading all this rambling and will catch my post -- I certainly didn't read all of the posts of this thread :-S

I live in South Korea and Bing maps are off horizontally by some 1km, so they are about as good as not using a map at all. Further, Bing lacks about 80% of all the roads, again making me wonder why displaying a map at all.

There may be reasons for Garmin to switch to Bing, but for Korea it's a very bad idea. Please, Garmin, at least let me select whether I want to have Google or Bing maps. Bing is for me as good as having no map at all.
  • I'll join the rest, an hope that garmin will make GOOGLE MAPS available again.

Bing is a major step backwards from my point og view.
