Change to Bing maps disappointing

Former Member

Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

I suggest everyone go and write a comment on
their blog to let them know your disappointment. They are at least read
because they have to moderate all comments.

    Garmin Return email

I sent Garmin an email and this is how they responded.

    Dear Mike Bronze,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for registering your Edge 500. Garmin has a rich history of collaborating with industry leaders, and using Bing maps with Garmin Connect provided an opportunity to build upon our existing relationship with Microsoft.

Garmin Connect users will continue to enjoy all of the familiar mapping features and functions that bring more than 40 million saved activities to life, and working with Bing will lead to more exciting developments in the future.

    With Best Regards,

The smart thing to do would be to have both Google and Bing maps initially. Don't tell me it couldn't be done because RunKeeper.com uses both via user select. Then when these "exciting Bing developments" ever eventuate, users will naturally start to choose Bing over Google. How they've done it is just a kick in the groin to everyone.

I had used Garmin connect for years until the other morning when I noticed something different on my Mac. Anther user posted a picture of the untidy frame work in FF on the Mac. Thank god there are other sites that still integrate with my Garmin 705 and still use Google maps! All this I am sure to save a few pennies at the cost of customer service.

Garmin Connect users will continue to enjoy all of the familiar mapping features .. Garmin International

This is not even spin, it's a baldfaced lie.
A familiar mapping feature that I am no longer enjoying is topographic TERRAIN.
Personally another familiar mapping feature that I no longer enjoy is aerial coverage outside of metropolitan areas, but this one could be be argued away as they have continued to provide the same coverage but at a vastly reduced resolution, pretty much making it useless.
  • I can feel my decade long man crush on garmin going away... after waiting patiently while the update took its sweet time, we are awarded with BING maps?! What a horrible, horrible, switch. Im letdown. I'll be switching, and all my friends who I had suggested how great garmin connect was (very true) I'll have my tail between my legs when I tell them this news.

    Back to Google!

I spent 30 minutes figuring out how to register my stupid login for forums just so I could agree that the Bing maps are bad. I also used the google terrain view a lot.

    Very disappointing.

Maybe it will be advantageous for Garmin's relationship with MicroSoft, but this certainly will not help Garmin to build upon its relationship with its customers!!!!

    Garmin Maps

Garmin Connect has recently moved to Bing maps. Bad move!

Before this, I had a choice of map, terrain (with contours) and satellite. Before this all the hill trails on which I run were accurately shown on the map and satellite, with elevations.

Now I have a choice of map or satellite. The satellite images are muddy and poor. The map shows none of the trails on which I run, very little road information at all and a very inaccurate placement for the village where I live. The only road shown on the "map" of the area is a figment of someone's imagination. It bears no relationship to any existing road or to any trail on which I run.

The move to Bing maps is a disaster for me and means I will have to find another software package
