Considering Purchasing a Nuvi

I am considering throwing away my TomTom and purchasing a Garmin Nuvi. There is something very important that I need to know before I do. When the Garmin has been sitting unused for any length of time will it start and operate immediately once plugged into the car's 12v power outlet? This may seem a foolish question to ask but if my TomTom sits for a week without use and I try to use it, it will not operate until the battery is fully charged - even when it is plugged into the 12v power of the car. So I really need to know if this is going to happen also with the Garmin.

Thanks for any help!

  • What model of TomTom do you have and how old is it?
The battery was starting to lose capacity on my 3 year old TomTom One, but I didn't have the problems you describe. It would start up immediately power was connected (after pressing the on button!). However, it did develop some other faults, which sometimes meant you had to completely drain the battery to reset it.

I have only recently moved to a Garmin Nüvi 1390 LMT, so don't know how many years the battery will last. However, I can say that I'm impressed with its battery life.

If you're using the Garmin 12Vdc power cable, the Nüvi will start-up and shut-down automatically when start and stop the car - which is a very nice feature. One the other hand, the Nüvi takes much longer to start up than my old TomTom - and when it does, it often takes a while before it 'gets its bearings' - although it seems to get a satellite lock straight away - it will often think you're going in the other direction for a while.
