Dakota 20: Difference between odometer and track distance

I took a loop hike today. I used the reset page to clear the current track memory and reset all trip data before I started my hike. I have the latest software versions (SW 3.50, GPS SW 4.52) installed on my Dakota 20. On the map and trip computer pages the odometer indicated I had moved 3.77 miles, whereas the distance shown on my current track page indicated that I had moved 4.2 miles. Why are the distances shown different? Which is more accurate? Is there a different set of track setting that I should be using, that would make the odometer and track distance the same?
As another example -- I have also let the unit sit in one place for 3 hrs, after which the odometer read 327 ft, whereas the track distance shown was in excess of 532 ft. It appears that different types of calculations are being done for the odometer and the track distance. Anyone know how the calculations differ?

Thanks,
Chris

Can't help with the Dakota 20, but I am getting exactly the same issue with my eTrex Legends HCx.

Did a hike over the weekend with both trip and track reset before starting. As we finished the trip said 28.96km, whilst the track is coming up as 27.45km. That's a 5% difference! I'd also love to know what's going on.
