How do you keep Garmin Mobile active while mobile phone's power is off?

With free turn-by-turn navigation apps from Microsoft and Google, I wouldn't be surprised if Garmin pulls the plug on Mobile XT for good. But I was just curious if Garmin Mobile is officially defunct.
