Garmin 62S Not Powering On

I've had my 62s for about 2-3 months now and use it for geocaching. So far it's worked flawlessly. I used it about a week ago and had no problems.

Now, when I plug it into my PC USB it starts to power on (welcome screen), then slowly fades off. I tried to turn it on with it's batteries and no luck. I tried to turn it on with a new set of batteries (alkalines) and same thing, it starts to boot up at the welcome screen where it's loading waypoints, then slowly fades back off.

I have not dropped the unit or had anything abnormal happen to it. I can't even think of anytime it's been exposed to water at all either. It's only out with me geocaching about once every 2-3 weeks.

The only change I made is before my trip a week ago, I put in Ni-Mh batteries, but I changed the settings in the unit to those. I had always used Alkalines before.

    Warning: This procedure may delete information (waypoints, routes, tracks, etc) from your GPS and settings may be set back to factory defaults. It is intended to be a "last ditch" recovery procedure.

    If your GPSMAP freezes during the startup process (i.e. Loading Maps...), and you've just loaded new maps or new gpx files then it could be the new files which are causing the problem. This procedure forces the unit into USB Mass Storage mode so that you can delete (or rename) these files. Follow these steps to recover:

    1. Press and hold the "Up" arrow on the 4-way button
    2. Attach the GPSMAP to your computer via USB cable while continuing to press "Up"
    3. Continue to hold down the "Up" button for 30 seconds while the GPSMAP boots.
    4. The GPSMAP should enter USB mass storage mode
    5. From your computer remove or rename any gpx, map files (.img or .kmz) files that were recently added
    6. Unplug the GPSMAP and power on to see if this remedies the problem


    During step 3) you should only see the Garmin banner for 30 seconds followed immediately by the USB graphic. If you see any other text such as your custom banner, banners for loading maps, waypoints, etc then you have not held down the power button long enough.

    Thanks Amir,

    I tried that and was able to get to the USB Mass Storage Mode. I deleted all my waypoints & gpx files. The only maps I have on my device are the Lower 49 that I purchased from Garmin when I bought the unit. I did not delete those maps, but I will try.

    I am still getting the unit to fade to off while loading.

    Try reloading the unit software. Connect the 62s to the computer (in mass storage mode) and run Webupdater. If you have the latest software, it should ask you if you want to download the same version again, otherwise it should download the latest from you and then install it as you restart the unit.

    If you have not yet downloaded Webupdater, look for it on the Garmin site.

    I did need to update from 2.50 to 2.60 so I ran the webupdater.

    Unfortunately, when I started the unit, it got to "validating 0%" and then the screen faded and turned off :(

    Try the procedure again, this time remove the microSD card. Also delete (cut and paste to your computer) any kmz files you may have on the unit.

    I popped out the Micro SD and I cut/pasted my .img files (only ones were the lower49 from Garmin) to my desktop and repeated the procedure.

    It's back to fading to off at the map load screen. In case I am missing the .kmz files, where are they normally stored? I don't see them in the main Garmin folder.

    The kmz files are in the Garmin-CustomMaps folder. I would copy all the files on the microSD card to your computer and reformat the microSD card. That helps sometimes.

    Unfortunately I am beginning to believe your unit needs to make a trip to Garmin. Send it without the microSD card. Talk to a tech on the phone, they will try some steps, maybe not all we did, as they don't know half of them and then they will give in and tell you where exactly to send it.

    For anyone searching this forum with the same problem, I had the exact same symptoms as well... I ended up doing method #2 below (#1 did not work) and everything is fine now.

    Recovery Method #2 (Useful if you've just attempted a software upgrade and now the GPS won't boot)
    If you've just updated and for some reason the GPS will not boot (i.e. freezes at the Garmin logo or complains about system software missing) then this procedure will sometimes recover the unit.

    Follow these steps:
    1. Remove the batteries from your GPSMAP 62 or 78
    2. Download the recovery file, save it onto your PC and unzip the file into a directory such as C:\Recovery
    3. From Explorer, navigate to C:\Recovery and drag and drop the rgn file onto Updater.exe. The updater program should start.
    4. Set "Connection Settings" to be "USB Device".
    5. Hold down the "Up" arrow button on the GPSMAP and connect the GPS via USB cable to your computer. (Note: I've seen some Garmin instructions that indicated that you should hold down the "Power" button but this has not worked for me)
    6. Once the device name is visible in the Updater window after "USB Device", click on "OK".
    7. The program should start the update and you can release the "Up" button.
    8. Leave the GPS plugged in until you receive a confirmation of a successful update and click "OK".
    9. Unplug the GPS, reinstall the batteries and power on your GPS. Under Setup>About verify the device is running version 2.40
    10. After this update run Webupdater to make sure you have the latest software.

    If you would like to use this procedure to upgrade to a different version from the one provided in the recovery file above go to the Versions page and download the gcd file for the version you would like use. Download and run TurboCCC's RGN_Tool to convert the gcd file to a rgn file and use that rgn file instead of the one included in the recovery file. This tool has been used
    successfully with the default settings but please see TurboCCC's wiki for the latest details on how to use this tool.

    Dear all and need your help!

    I have a same problem with GPS Garmin 62sc, it not powering on, after screen appears "Loading waypoints, tracks and router..." the device turns off.
    I do all guide in http://garmingpsmap.wikispaces.com/Miscellaneous#toc3 but the problem was not fix.
    I tried to perform master reset this unit but after select [Yes] the unit not boot and turns off.
    I also tried to put this unit in USB Mass storage but not success. I hold on Up-button and plug the unit to computer. Then the screen appear Garmin logo, about 25 seconds later the screen appears "Loading waypoints, tracks and router..." then device turns off.

    I have this exact issue. The unit is practically brand new. Methinks there is a crop of 62stc units that are lemons. Mine didn't require any special procedure to enter USB mode, it just did it as soon as it was plugged in, even to a car outlet. Very Annoying. Also it always listens (ed) for "Chirps" but never heard any.
