a connection to the server could not be established. Please ensure that you have..

when downloading maps update you might get this error: " a connection to the server could not be established. Please
ensure that you have a connection to the internet"

here are 2 solutions:

1) use computer without Antivirus turned on and without firewall.

2)
The issue may be caused by your Internet Settings. You should start by
adjusting them to accommodate the Garmin Map Update Application:

Open Internet Explorer
Go to the Tools menu
Click Internet Options
Click the Security tab
Click the green check labeled Trusted Sites
Click the Sites button
Type: *.garmin.com
Uncheck the box labeled Require server verification (https) for all
sites in this zone
Click the Add button
Click Close
Click the Connections tab
Click the LAN Settings button
Put a check next to Automatically detect settings
Uncheck all other boxes and click OK
Select the Programs tab and make sure that Internet Explorer is the
default web browser
Select the Advanced tab
Scroll down to the Security section
Uncheck the box next to Check for publisher?s certificate revocation
Uncheck the box next to Check for server certificate revocation
Click the OK button
Once you have completed the steps listed above please try running the
Garmin Map Update application again.

    alternate method to download maps

Out of sheer desperation, I restarted my WinVista laptop in 'safe mode with networking' and started the download again. It completed successfully!!!

We'll see if it totally resolves the problem. It would appear that it will cure it as you have very few issues (i.e anti-virus, firewall) to contend with.
