Different routing in Dakota 10 and Mapsource

Hello

I’ve created a route in Mapsource and downloaded to my Dakota 10.

The route shown on my unit is different from the one created in Mapsource, for example some part of the route are connected by direct lines (Ie. the marking points), and some parts of route double back (as if it is trying to avoid a road type). As a consequence I get route calculation error.

Why does the Dakota calculate a different route from that I have created? Surely it should show exactly the route? Is it do with the settings in the Dakota?

This has been the case in many Garmin GPS units, the 60cs, 60csx, Oregon 400i, and now 62s. The handhelds use a different algorithm than Mapsource.

If you want to follow the absolute same route, define a few critical via points.

Thanks, seems a bit bizarre. I can see I'll have to enter more via points but the 50 limit is a pain. Also this is for a bike ride and want to keep on minor roads and even with the bicycle setting and 'avoid highways' option it still can redirect to some major roads.

Another way of doing this is to convert your route into a track and navigate the track. There will be no difference between a track planned on any software and the one shown/used by your GPS.

Are you sure with this ? I have got edge 705 and the only way is to use courses. I don't know if Dakota has support for it.

There were differences between track in mapsource and in gps when I used it.

Do you have the same routing preference set in Mapsource and the GPS? That is are the both bike, and prefer minor roads, etc.? That can cause this, I know from personal experience. :o

Yes I have, I have done some routes by increasing the number of points and it works pretty well, just means I have to do alot more individual routes (due to the rather stupid 50 points limit)
