3790T Problems Updating Software

Former Member
Former Member
Hi

When I connect the 3790T to the computer Dashboard or WebUpdater let me know that there are software updates available.

When I run the software update it tells me that it was successful.

When I go back into Dashboard or WebUpdater I get the same message that there are software updates available. Round and Round I go.

Can anyone help please ?
  • How did you get on in Hong Kong?

I tried to use the city explorer Chicago maps recently and found that for transit information you needed a gps satellite lock, which took ages to acquire every time I stepped out of my Hotel or off the bus/train.

    Totally un practical and unusable.

My ipod was much better using wifi location. ( not even gps)

Just wanted to say that yanking the cable out was the only method that worked for me on my MacBook.

What is the latest correct software and firmware versions

I still get the software update needed no matter how I disconnect and restart per this thread. I did look in the settings about and it looks like I have v3.6 of the software and 2.6 of the firmware. Are these the latest? If so then the update worked but it's just the mydashboard that can't see it?

    Stay away from garmin

I am at my wits end with this company. Not only am I having the same exact problem with the 3790, but I have two 1300t's that are basically bricks. I bought one for myself and another for my girlfriend shortly after. Both started shutting off out of nowhere and I installed the updates which basically did nothing. The touch screen on one basically became inoperable and after touching just little harder than normal the screen cracked!

I called them and the d-bag basically told me I'm SOL since my warranty was up (by a month) I couldn't believe how much of a jerk this guy was being to someone who has multiple garmin devices.

I vowed I would never buy a garmin product again and was perfectly happy with my Navigon app on my iphone which works better than a garmin could ever work. But I got this for Christmas and was pleased to see they fixed the whole touch screen that barely works problem. Now I can't update the maps or the software. My girlfriend thinks I'm overreacting but she doesn't understand this stuff. And it's just reminding me of how I couldn't update the maps on my 1300t's either!

Now what? I have to sit on the phone with these inept people and possibly have to send it back and wait a month? If someone didn't throw the box out on me I'd be returning this thing in a second and not look back.
  • Updating Software Problems on the 3790

Regarding the problems folks are having updating software on their 37XX series Garmins with Macs...Unfortunately, when the Mac ejects the Garmin Disk on your desktop it is corrupting the last file copied to the unit. Using WebUpdater to update software and firmware is problematic because WebUpdater automatically ejects the Garmin after the update, corrupting that last part of the downloaded file causing the download problems folks are experiencing. Using My Dashboard to download updates is preferable under the present circumstances because My Dashboard does not automatically eject your Garmin disk. If the last file is simply a sizable sacrificial text file then the update will load fine when the unit is ejected. The solution is to e-mail Garmin Support and ask them to send you a file called "space.gpx." This is a text file that you drag onto your Garmin Disk on the Desktop BEFORE ejecting the disk. If anything gets corrupted, it will be this "space.gpx" file which has no value except that it is a sort of sacrificial file. There is an update coming sometime that will correct this problem. Until then, this should solve your problems. My experience with Garmin is that I get better responses to problems if I contact them via e-mail and receive a response from tech support. That is how I secured this information. So, my recommentation is to go to Garmin Support and send them an e-mail explaining your download problems. Mention this post and ask for the space.gpx file and step by step instructions for successfully downloading updates using the space.gpx file. Then pray for the update to permanently fix this issue. Good Luck.

Update: Monday, Jan. 10th. I just signed onto My Dashboard and saw that there was a software update for the 37XX series. I asked Tech Support about this update (Software Update Version 3.6). If I understood them correctly this update includes the "space.gpx" file mentioned above. So, if you do the update you will be installing the sacrificial file that should take care of the software installation problems this thread has been addressing. I may be wrong, but if this is the case you should be able to install this update using WebUpdater too. Since the update contains the space.gpx file when WebUpdater auto-ejects your Garmin it should not corrupt any important files. FYI...They HAVE changed the wording when you update using My Dashboard to let you know that you must manually restart the Garmin. You MUST press the on/off button. (Restarting is part of the software installation process). The 37XX will not auto-restart. If you use WebUpdater you will NOT be given these instructions. They have NOT updated the instructions on WebUpdater to tell you that you must manually restart the Garmin using the on/off button. If fact, WebUpdater pretty much has no directions as to how to proceed with the installation process. It only says after the software is downloaded to disconnect your Garmin from your computer. Pretty sparse. Garmin still has a way to go with regard to making this whole software/firmware updating business more straightforward and user friendly. It really surprises me that this is not a bigger part of their product design mandate. FYI, below is the status of my 3790T after installing the latest software update:

    Software Version: 3.60
    Audio Version: 1.90 (American English-Jack)
    Text Version: 3.60 (American English)
GPS Firmware: 2.60 (TWO point six zero)
    Bluetooth Firmware: 3.0.35 P55
    PMIC Version: 822
    TSC Version: 1.16

Don't think this is going to solve everyone's problems. But, I have been able to update to the latest software and this is what I learned along the way. The directions specified by Garmin's WebUpdater are WRONG for Garmin's newer units like the 3790T. They current directions say that after installing the software update to eject your Garmin from the computer, then remove the USB cable, then WAIT for the Garmin to turn itself on. They say if you turn on the unit manually you may render the unit inoperable. This is correct for older Garmin units. But it is TOTALLY NOT correct for newer units like the 3790T. For the 3790T you MUST press the on/off button to turn on the Garmin and finish the update. It will NEVER turn on by itself. Anyway, I didn't discover this. I was given this information by Garmin tech support. I can't understand why they haven't updated the directions! Also, speaking of the on/off button. You may notice that if you press the left side of the button nothing happens. It's useless. Press the middle of the button and it may work. Press the right side and it works like a charm. It took a call to tech support to straighten this one out too. They checked a unit in their office and said their unit behaved the same way as mine! I mention this because when you manually turn on the unit, after installing a software update, you will need to press the right side of the on/off button.

Thanks so much. After 6 hours of unproductive work, I tried your solution and it worked! Software and maps downloaded. The directions in the pdf user manual are still not correct.

    Hidden Garmin Folder files?

Thanks for this thread. Until the recent change in the menu that said to just unplug the 3760T and restart it manually, I was kind of "winging it" on getting the updates.

I had another issue though. I'm trying to make sure that I've got the latest JCV file, but the Garmin folder when I have it connected via USB only shows one file. The properties tab for Windows is checked to show hidden files, but I'm still not seeing anything???

    Any thoughts?

    Look for.System\JCV

    Nothing there except GarminDevice.xml

When I click on the Garmin icon after attaching via USB, I see a Garmin folder. The only thing in it is the above file. I can't seem to see any of the hidden folders in that one..
