Road details gone AWOL - how to restore?

I have an Oregon 550 and I have noticed that the roads data has suddenly disappeared from the basemap - I have only checked the UK but I can't see why it should be any different anywhere else. I have also just obtained the Topo maps for SE France on MicroSD and I hoped that this might restore the roads but when the maps of France are displayed I still don't get any roads in France either..... I have sent tech query to Garmin - but no reply to date.....

Can anyone shed any light on this please? I have only had the GPS for a couple of weeks and I would like to get it working properly again (it displayed the roads for a while but then they disappeared last week)....which rather reduces the effectiveness of the piece of kit for geo-caching.

After posting this request for assistance yesterday, I was determined to find out what had changed to cause this and, as an almost last throw of the dice, I finally checked out profiles - changed the profile from recreational to automotive and then geocache and what do you know? - The roads are back in all their inaccurate but nevertheless welcome, glory throughout the maps of UK and Europe..... a considerable relief!!!
