305 Unable to load GPS Firmware

Using WebUpdate I get the following error when trying to
install Chipset G.

"The Garmin device is unable to program the requested
memory region. This could be due to an incompatibility between this
application and the Garmin device."

What is odd is that sometimes after trying the download and getting the error the GPS v2.8 will show up and the unit works fine. If it is shutoff the ver returns to 0.00 and the unit does not work.

I'm running Windows XP on the computer running updater. I'm installing the latest firmware and GSP software because the 305 will no longer locate satellites. I've tried hard and soft resets along with updating to v2.90. I've contacted Garmin support and they say the GPS unit is defective and to send in for $79 repair.

Is there any way to avoid the $79 repair? Does anyone know what Garmin actually fixes to repair this problem?
  • Memory error

    Hi there,

I've got the same problem, due to the device getting very wet.
After drying up in the sun almost everything works fine, except locating satellites...
Testing the device (Enter - Power) shows fails on bmap, rest (3 of 4) show pass.
Trying to replace chipset software shows error:
The garmin device is unable to program the requested memory region.
    Any luck in your quest?

305 Locating Satellites - bmap fails

My 305 won't update chipset either. It also won't lock onto satellites (which is why i was trying to update in first place). My Bmap fails as well (hit mode a few times to get to that screen).
