You don't have to do anything to activate the traffic function. When you are "in range" and receive traffic notices an icon will appear on your Nuvi 1490 screen. It may be colored gray, green, amber, or red depending on what the traffic condition is.
As for your phone book...... when you pair your bluetooth compatible phone to the Nuvi, the Nuvi will "download" your contacts list.
