why even have this forum?

I see scores of feature requests yet not much response beyond the occasional "we hear you"

months go by with no implementation of even simpleton features like backdating goals.

is there a roadmap of what is coming? why not?? lots of other websites do this and are MUCH more proactive/transparent about their plans.

I find myself so frustrated with the slow progress here that I am ready to switch to RideWithGPS.com for activity logging (I already use it for mapping out routes). and that's built by three college students in their free time!

sorry for the rant but I'm pretty exasperated at this point...

    I do apologize

Just figured out what happened, all makes sense now: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/03/garmin-connect-development-team-tossed.html

even more reason to migrate elsewhere.

    I suspect they're overworked.

As, I've not heard back from my support email sent Saturday, and when I tried Garmin's phone support system, I was told it would be 15-20 minutes on hold, before someone was 'available'.

If Garmin products were less popular (or more money were put back into the product and features), such delays would be less of an issue imo.

    Don

ps. Is that a free site, or is there a subscription needed after a trial period? (your follow-up post's link doesn't work, for me; but, the search engine 'cached' version does, and that certainly explains this particular issue).

And, your topic's very timely for me, as I've 14 days remaining for my store's no questions asked return period for my Garmin Forerunner 305 I just bought. :)

(I'm an advocate of 'voting with your wallet' for company policies you support or do not support.)

Interesting read, and one that explains the lack of any updates, no matter how small, to this website.

We can all see the potential this place has, and the painfully slow progress towards it and I don't really understand why. Garmin insist on missing the opportunity to make this place a real "Added value" place to ensure people dont just use their iPhone / Android device to track there runs with all the free apps there are out there. Never mind all the competition from Polar/Timex etc etc

One 310xt customer thats very happy with his device, but thoroughly disappointed with using a website that cant seem to impliment easy updates, on a timely mannor, with a published timescale.

But hey, who am I :)
  • This explains a lot.

GC development have practically been next to zero in the later time i think.
I use moore and moore 3 party solutions because GC development is so slow.

Yep, looks like 3rd party software is the go. It is a real shame because the site had a lot of potential and with everyone here suggesting improvements it could have been something really great.

Having said that the software is 'free' (i know a percentage of the Garmin products would be allocated to the software) so i guess you get what you pay for.

After paying $350 USD for a Garmin 310XT, you have a funny concept of "free"

I would have no issue paying a yearly fee if they would just get it right!

I doubt that this means no more updates. I think we've already had an update since MB/GC team departed.

There are lots of other sites that work with Garmin. I use runsaturday.com, but there are plenty of other sites.

For a little perspective, even with the MB/GC team in place, GC got off to a very slow start. There were a lot of promises made, including the migration of the data from MB, that did not materialize or were painfully slow to materialize. I don't know if this was the GC/MB programmer's fault, or Garmin management's fault. And originally, the model was that GC was going to be free initially, and when it had a complete set of features, then there would be an option to pay for it. I suspect that since the features were so slow in coming and there was so much initial displeasure with GC that they didn't dare think about charging people to use it. At this point, I don't know what their future strategy with GC is. At the same time, they also seem to be supporting GTC, and it's not clear if they intend to continue supporting and developing both GTC and GC over the long term, and if so, what their respective roles would be.
  • Since the start of the GC controversy (If I can put it this way), many very active voices on the motionbased forum are now almost silent.
The "tone" on the new forum as degrated a lot since the motionbased forum.

I personnaly prefer GC over motionbased, but I am using the 705 as a toy/convenience tool. Not for training.

    Regarding the device firmware:
I still beleive that if GARMIN would allow open firmware developpment, like I started discussing "in this thread" there would be enormous developpment done by the community.
