176c Display problem

Former Member

Hi,

I have a Garmin 176c, and the top third of the display is missing (like the image moved off the top of the screen).

Below the bottom of the image, which is moved one third of the way up the screen, is an upside down, inverted image of the bottom third of the display above it. I has a different color as well, but is an upside down, mirror image, going down to the bottom of the display.

I know that's a confusing description, but any advice is appreciated.

Garmin will no longer service this unit, so I'm willing to try anything.

Thanks! Tony

    Hi,

I had the same EXACT problem for one day until today....when the upside characters went away and now I'm left with a blank screen with a black bar going across the top. PLEASE HELP!

    Thank you,
    Michael

    176c

I spoke to tech support (after waiting on hold for 35 minutes) only to be told that they do not support the 176 anymore and they they cannot repair it or even order parts. I asked if it was basically garbage now and the csr said yes. I took it apart to see if there was corrosion but there wasn't any. If you take it apart be very careful with the power supply that goes to the screen; in unplugging and replugging it, i broke the very delicate solder. I'll have to repair that before I am able to go any further.
I do find it odd that you and I had the same problem within days of each other. Good luck with yours and if you can keep the 2/3rds of the screen working, congratulations. I'm going to keep looking online for solutions because I simply don't have $500 to $1000 to replace this right now

    Same problem

My unit also starting doing the same thing in the top third of the screen, everything is reversed, upside down, like looking into a mirror. Started doing this about 1 week and a half ago. Do you suppose these units are programmed to self destruct?

Used units selling on ebay for around 275. Will be interested if you find a solution.

I bought another 176c on Craigslist and right before we were about to complete the transaction, the guy wanted to power it up one last time and the screen was blank. He was shocked because it worked perfectly a week or so ago.

I'd love to hear if there were more people like us because then it would seem that this is no coincidence (as gopher suggested) and I would want Garmin to own up to it.

I am really disappointed because I want to go on a trip to Block Island next week and really relied on my GPS.

sound to me like Garmin really don't care that people sunk a $1000 into these unit and don't hold up. I would think that would care about costomer satifaction. I also have a garmin for my car. I"ll say, if they won't stand behind there product in anyway, I"m done with them!
