efield test: failed

Former Member

trying to reset my garmin 405 (battery 0%, "line of death mode", connected to power source), i somehow got into a hidden diagnostics mode with various information including firmware version, temperature, time and various tests (RAM), display and bezel diagnostics and a certain "efield" test. i ran the efield test and it seems to have "failed".
can anyone tell me:
1) how did i get into this mode?
2) what does the information mean?
3) what is an efield test?
thanks in advance!

    frustrating efield test???

I've had my watch for a day and on my second run, I have the same issue. I was running outside in a light rain with the bezel locked. It worked for about half the run and then went into this diagnostic mode that includes the system information, efield test, and an array of high and low contrasts on the screen. I'm not sure what button/bezel pushing got me into this screen, as I was running.

I have the same questions as Chris, as well as, how do I get out of this mode?
  • This is a diagnostics mode used in the factory.
You can exit this mode by holding both keys until the unit resets.
The efield test will always fail, and does not indicate anything is wrong.

A similar thing happened to me on Saturday. The watch was fully charged. I turned the GPS on, but before a satellite was located, the watch began logging 1 second laps - counting up to around 100. Then, I got several odd screens - an 'X', an expanding picture frame, stripes, dark and light screens. Finally, I got the info screen with S/W revision, etc. The next screen was the E Field test screen, which of course failed. I tried holding both keys, but the unit will not reset. I get 2 high-pitched tones. Now, I have a blank screen and no control at all.

    Thoughts?
