Time Loss 276C

My 276C losses time when it's off. The Battery Indicator shows a full charge. Is there another battery for the clock?

Is this user serviceable?

  • There's a small button battery inside the unit that keeps power to a bit of memory that stores almanac data. When this battery craters, you loose the internal time and the unit takes much longer to re-quire sat. coverage. It is user changeable if you're brave and have a bit of mechanical aptitude. The other option is to get a RMA from Garmin support and send the unit to them. For ~$150.00 they'll send you a re-fub with full warranty. PM me if you want a link to the repair procedure.
  • Garmin offered this fix:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'm sorry to hear that your GPSMAP 276c is showing an incorrect date and time. It looks as if you have the current software (v5.50) loaded to your unit.

Time comes from an embedded timestamp in the 50w GPS transmission from orbit. The unit will not be able to show correct time until it acquires signal. If the unit is not acquiring easily, press and hold the zoom out and power buttons to turn the unit on. Hold them both down until the I agree button lights up. Release the buttons, and press enter. It should say Auto Locate at the top then. This resets the almanac of the unit and should acquire soon after. This will happen if the unit has been off for a long time or has traveled a great distance while off.

That didn't work so they are replacing the unit under warranty.

My 276C was recently replaced by Garmin for that problem, no charge, but the refurbished unit now has the same problem, doesn't maintain date & time when off for more than a day. Now Garmin techical support tells me the 276C doesn't have an almanac battery. I would appreciate the link info so I can effect the replacement. Thanks WCRING, [email protected]
