Garmin software for the Android phones.

I know you guys at Garmin have your Garminfone thingy but some of us already have or prefer other Android phones.

That said, do you have plans to make Garmin GPS software for the Android phones?

Seems to me, you guys would offer your software for sale rather then to wait for someone to rip if from your phones rom and port it for all Androids.

This would be something I would gladly pay for.

Garmin Android Team, snap snap! If you guys don't, you know someone will rip, crack/port it sooner or later.

    Me too Please

I have been a Garmin user for years and love the software. very easy to use. I would love to be able to purchase garmin software for my HTC EVO. There are many different navigation apps out there but I have no yet found one that has all the features and is as easy to use, so for now I continue to use my NUVI for navigation, sure would be nice to only have to carry one device. Please Please Please release a software app for android. I am sure it would sell very well.

Garmin's silence is deafening. I too have a different Android based phone. Life has taught me that if there is a market for a product, someone will fill that market. If Garmin chooses not to offer their software to non-Garminfone Android users, they will lose a lot of customers to someone that will. Not smart business sense.

    How true..

Having swapped my sat nav product over to NDrive I couldn't be more happier.

I was actually hunting the market place hoping that Garmin had a good solution, as the free gps attempts in my opinion are all an utter failure. I'm fairly certain they could dominate the Android market for very little additional coding. If that's what we programmed here, I'm sure my boss would already have me all over this (of course he'd want it done at night, on my own time and done asap ;)

I've now owned 5 different Garmin GPS units - an Etrex Legend, a GPSmap 60c, a GPSmap 60csx and two XT units. I've also owned the XT software for a Touch Pro 2. So to say that I've liked Garmin products over the years is a huge understatement.

Garmin's apparent stance on not releasing a standalone Android app is baffling. Garmin is trying to have its Garminfone lock horns with every other Android smart phone on the market with the Garminfone's sales having yet to impress. Every other new Android phone on the market runs the free Google map application that is getting better and better. The Google app will not lose to Garmin. Most people likely won't pay for something when they are already getting a decent product for free. Consequently, Garmin doesn't have a chance of beating Google. The only chance Garmin has at competing in the smart phone space is to grab as much market share as they can by making their Android software available to every Android based phone on the market. Anything less will surely doom Garmin's Android software and the Garminfone to failure.

The bottom line is that the phone I bought is better than the Garminfone, with or without Garmin maps. My phone is more powerful, has more memory and has a newer version of Android on it. What's more, it can run pretty good geocaching apps on it which reduces my need to ever replace my 60csx with another Garmin handheld unit.

I shouldn't have to settle for inferior hardware just to get Garmin maps. However, since Garmin appears determined to blow it with their past customers that want Garmin maps on other Android phones, I guess I'm ready to move on. What a shame for the once mighty Garmin name to be brought down by their own bad decisions.

    Give us what we want!!

The first garmin product I used was on a Windows Mobile PDA then smartphone and it was pretty good. I like the idea of just carrying one device around, (PDA/Phone/GPS/Camera) and with my current htc Incredible I can do just that. At present I am using Google Navigator which is good but I really miss some of the features of the Garmin Apps.

Please Garmin release your software for all androids, I know I will buy it and I am sure lots of others will too.

Almost all GPS companies go through one of about 3 mapping companies and if I am correct Garmin has a licensing deal with Navteq thru 2015.

Did it occur to any of you that possibly Garmin has a restricted licensing deal with the Navteq maps which would disallow an Android app?

Hint: Nokia owns a large part of Navteq

Another Hint: Google maps? Not using Navteq data (Tele-Atlas)

Connecting the dots is an exercise left to the reader.

Watchmerun, Your connect the dots assertion is pretty weak. Here are some dots for you to connect. If Navteq doesn't want Garmin to create an Android app then how did Garmin manage to create the app anyway for the Garminfone? Is your assertion OS specific? If not then how do you explain their X10 app for Windows Mobile? It can be used on any Win Mo phone and the last time I checked Garmin has never produced one of those. Does Nokia even have an Android based phone? If so it's news to me. I seriously doubt that Navteq has anything to do with Garmin not releasing their Android to other Android phone users.

I'll connect the dots for you. I think that Garmin doesn't want to sell the app to non Garmin Android users in hopes that people wanting the Garmin Android app will buy a Garminfone instead. Now it looks like Garmin has thrown in the towel on Garminfone. Perhaps Garmin will wise up and market the app to everyone before the competition renders Garmin irrelevant in the Android space.
