HELP - bought wrong card

Former Member
Former Member
Hi, hope someone can help.

I bought a data card from an online retailer for my gpsmap76cx that was supposed to be a mini sd.....it was not. It was actually the standard garmin memory card which I now will have to pay shipping back to the retailer and possible restocking fee if I return it.

Can I purchase one of the card reader/programmers and transfer the files to my pc then to mini sd card on my unit? If not, how can I make this mess better?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Actually, what you wanted is what is called a 'microSD' card NOT a 'mini SD.' miniSD is an entirely different card altogether that is not compatible with (will not fit) the GPSmap 76Cx.

Before anyone can answer your question properly we need to know EXACTLY what you bought. You use the terminology, 'standard garmin memory card,' which means nothing to most people. Do you mean that you bought Garmin maps on an SD card instead of a microSD card?

If so, are you asking, if you were to buy a blank microSD card and transfer the data, using a card reader, from the Garmin SD card to the blank microSD card, will the maps still work? As opposed to returning the Garmin SD card and exchanging it for a Garmin microSD card?

If that is your question, I can't say for sure since I've never tried it. Something tells me it should still work but please don't take my word for it.

As an aside, most people would recommend buying Garmin maps on DVD and installing them on your own microSD card for use in the GPS unit. This way you can install the maps on your computer to be used in BaseCamp for planning trips ahead of time and viewing data you collected and transferred from the GPS unit to the computer.
