I have had a problem for years with gross inconsistencies between the odometer and the length of a track log on my GPSMap 60CSx. Today, for example, early in the hike I checked the map screen and noticed that the 1000 feet radius circle happened to be passing right through the trailhead (the beginning of the track) but the odometer said we had gone about 500 feet. We were in mountainous terrain and it was rainy, but the device was reporting a pretty good signal (about 10 meters accuracy).
So the device knew good and well that we had gone at least 1000 feet as the crow flies, but reported 500 feet total distance traveled. Hmmm.
Later on, after hiking for 2.5 hours, the odo said 0.75 miles and the saved track log gave about 2.75 miles. This happens routinely, but not consistently. It never happens when I am traveling in the car, and seldom when hiking along briskly in town or along the top of a ridge above tree line, but pretty regularly when moving slowly in hilly and/or forested country. Admittedly, these are not ideal GPS reception conditions, but I'm not talking about situations where the device loses the signal - the accurate track log shows that the device knows where it is at very frequent intervals, and so ought to able to figure out how far it has traveled.
I have gone through three different Garmin high sensitivity units, all behaving the same way, but have never gotten anyone at Garmin to acknowledge any problem, despite many emails and phone calls. My latest attempt to get Garmin's attention ended thusly:
"I've submitted a research form for the odometer differences to be looked into. *You will be contacted by another associate in the near future."
This smells like a brush-off. Has anyone out there seen problems like this? Does anyone know how to actually get Garmin's attention at a level above the "call center".
