HELP Garmin Nuvi 1690

I tried updating my Garmin Nuvi 1690 this morning and now it's stuck on Loader Loading. I've been unable to reset or anything - it just sticks on this screen.

Anyone, please help to get this Garmin unstuck!

My 1690T and I thank you, as well...

My thanks also to TwiglightGleaming for the instructions. I was stuck. Even with the instructions, I had a spot of trouble getting WebUpdater to update it, but after a couple of tries under Internet Explorer, it did (I normally use Firefox).

BTW, if your mileage history ever goes nuts, or if your unit takes forever to start up, try backing up and deleting (Driver Letter)\.System\sqlite\mlg_history.db . It can get to big and/or gets corrupted pretty easily.

i have a 1390t, my first problem was that it wouldn't get past the garmin screen with the green bar, i was able to at that point to do a master reset, then was able to connect it to the computer and then i disconected it then powered down. but now it just shows the garmin screen, no bar. it won't even let me do a master reset again. but if i hold the upper left screen while having the usb cable it the computer does see if breifly then it goes away after about 30 seconds? I'm thinking a file is corrupt. i have a friend that has one i can image his if i can get the thing to be seen by the computer again. Any guru's out there that can help? can reward by providing to a beer fund or something possibly?

Note: this was my father's he passed away, and never did find the reciept so have no idea if it's in warranty.

    What worked for me.

This is what finally worked for me (followed TWILIGHTSLASTGLEAMING steps and it didn't work :( but it did put me on track... Thanks!)

So my 1690 was version 3.6 Dunno if there is a problem skipping too many versions. I tried Lifetime Updater and WebUpdater with the same "Loader Loading" problem...

In the end I simply opened the 1690 ".system" folder (after holding top left corner and connecting with PC) and deleted all the files (NOT FOLDERS) out of the ".system" folder. The only exception was the prodkey.bin & prodkeyNA.bin files.

Literally, there were only the following in the .system folder:
FOLDERS: Diag, EULA, ExtDat5a, FCD, JCV, RemoteSW, sqlite
    FILES: prodkey.bin & prodkeyNA.bin files.

I then disconnected 1690 safely, plugged it back in via usb (it connected in PC mode automatically), opened up Life Time Updater and it installed the software update.

Disconnected as instructed (safely), removed USB cable, the 1690 re-booted. "Loader Loading" FLASHED on the screen then "SOFTWARE LOADING" came up. After about 3 minutes the 1690 booted to normal screen. Checked the version of the software and it was v3.90 (yay!)

Reconnected to Lifetime Updater and continued with the Map Update (Full Coverage of North America 2012.30)

I hope this helps someone else.

My suspicion was that an old file was causing the problem in the root ".system" folder so i got rid of everything there except the product keys.

I've included a picture of what MY .system folder looked like. I'm not saying this is the cure, but it's what resolved MY issue.

If you don't have Life Time Updater, you should be able to do the same thing with WebUpdater as it simply copies the same GUPDATE.GCD file to update the software version on the device. However, make sure you copy the map files back to your original .system folder on your unit (IF you don't subscribe or have the ability to download/install the maps again.)

    loader loading... never goes away

first thank you for all your explanations.

i've got a nov 1690 and constantly get the "Loader Loading..." message.

i tried following Garmin 1690 FAQs.

i tried every solution explained in this thread. i tried all variations.

the only thing i can get is the "Screen Calibration mode" and "Loader Loading..." message after calibration.

every time i try to connect my nuvi to my Mac via USB it gets automatically on and after a while...i get the "Loader Loading..." message.

the computer never recognizes the device.

anyone please help!!! i'm desperate with my device on a constant loop a can't fix!

    thanks.

    solution found!!!

sometimes the screen doesn't flash white.

it only flickers in a way you barely see. release the touchscreen when it does.

if one doesn't release the touchscreen at that time it goes to the "Screen Calibration mode"
