nuvi 650 Screen occasionally unresponsive

My Nuvi 750 does exactly the same when hot...... I live in Greece most of the time and in the summer I have problems with the touch screen if the system is in the car.....it never occurs in UK.

I have placed the unit for some minutes in front of the air con, turned on and off and it comes back OK.

The system will still monitor and communicate when this occurs but you can't operate via the touch screen.
On another front the screen often "slips", ie you end up having to touch about a centmeter below the actual apha nurmeric icon.

Same problem with Nuvi 660

I have the same problem with my Nuvi 660. First two times it happened, it self-corrected after disconnecting it and letting it "sit" for a period of time. Now, however, it's happened again and all my attempts to resurrect it have failed. Emailed customer support, but haven't heard anything back.

Considered the heat issue, it is in the 90s here in Denver. Wonder if anyone has tried putting the unit in the fridge for a while?

Will continue to monitor this thread to see if anyone comes up with a reliable resolution. Thanks.

I am having the same problem as many of you with my nuvi 660, I had it once before and while it has never been dropped it started working on its own. Two weeks later it is doing the same thing. I have been to Arizona and now back home so I am not sure what is going on.

Now I can not get it to respond at all--except that if I touch one area on the screen a different hot spot shows highlight. For instance I touch "View map" and "Where to?" highlights. If I touch "Where to?" then "Where to?" still highlights, but no action happens. Touching "Volume" or "Tools" makes nothing happen at all.

Suggestions welcome. Oh yeah--I have a Nuvi 255W

See my SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM of UNRESPONSIVE SCREEN posted below on 9/1/2010. I figured it out myself.

Too much my disappointment, the garmin tech support that I spoke to offered me a 80$ refurbished nuvi650 instead of telling me what was the cause of the problem. I don't know if they know but you can buy a brand new unit for that price.

So the deal is you can a refurbished unit with 90 day warranty that the unit will break after that time period because they don't know what's wrong with it. If it breaks within 100 days, they may (up to their discretion) replace it free. If it breaks past that time frame, well cough up another 80$ to get another broken device.

He explained to me that they just send the defectives unit back to their factory and send you another one that someone else sent back. I seriously doubt that they actually fix anything since he couldn't even acknowledge that it was a design flaw or software bug.

I even tried to explained to him that comparing older model vs newer ones, the older ones were more reliable than the new ones but as expected, he changed topic and was very evasive.

I guess I'm gonna go back to my nuvi200 at least this one never failed. My 650 will go in my epic fail junk box.

Sooo very disappointed in a company that is suppose to be a leader in the market.

So, I wonder where and what someone like, oh...say... GARMIN would have to say about this. SURELY they monitor their own forums, right? :rolleyes:

I don't know what good it does to post here but I have the same problem with my 650. I did read somewhere that if your serial number starts with 14V then you are likely to have the problem. Well, I have it and it failed and a most inopportune time when I really needed it. Fortunately I had my Droid-X phone which is a pretty good GPS navigator too.

I accidentally discovered the solution to my unresponsive screen and have not had a repeat problem since fixing it.

If you have a screen protector sheet, then remove it. But see the reason below. Correctly placed, the screen protector sheet is not a problem.

If you do not have a screen protector, look around the edge of the screen for some piece of foreign object stuck between the screen and the ledge around the screen.

Here is what happens: In the heat, or by vibration, my screen protector sheet slid down between the screen and the tiny ledge around the screen. If you currently have no problems with your unit you can duplicate the problem that I had by just holding a touch with your fingernail on the corner of the screen somewhere and then trying to use any menu spot on the screen with another finger. You will get something to blink, probably away from where you are pressing, but the menu will not work. See the description of my original problem in the quote above.

I discovered this when a Garmin tech said I could send it back for repair since the warranty was still good. They said to just send in the unit without any cords, etc. I did not want the repairman to think that my screen protector had anything to do with my problem so I removed it then tested my unit again. Wow. The unit was working perfectly again. Then I put the screen protector back on and it still worked. But I also noticed that there was a tiny ledge around the edge of the screen so I poked my fingernail under the little ledge at the edge of the screen and the unit acted the same as when I first had the problem...and unresponsive screen. Then I took my fingernail out and it worked again. I repeated this in various places around the screen all with the same results.:eek:

SO... look around the edge of your screen for anything that might make the screen think that it is being touched there. I left my screen protector off, but it could be put back on just so long as I remembered that if the screen became unresponsive I should remove the protector sheet again and replace it so no part goes under the little ledge around the edge of the screen.:confused:

I have always said that when a person discovers an answer to their own problem without someone posting the solution, then the original poster should post their own answer in the forum. I am just folowing my own rules in the hopes that someone can have an easy fix to thier problem because I am posting my solution along with my original post.:D

Hold power button down until Pre-boot screen, calibration screen.

I just took a trip to Kona...it was HOT!!! For the first time, my Garmin 650 flaked out on me...I believe it was the heat. No matter what I did, I couldn't get to to work. I knew I needed to re-calibrate the screen in order to get the touch functions to work, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to go into the SETTINGS mode...

I saw many "solutions" that included holding the screen down while I power on to get the pre-boot mode...but finally I found this link on the internet....

The problem the poster had was a little different, but it FIXED my garmin....

Hold the bottom left side of the screen down (don't really know if you have to do this) and press the power button until you see Pre-boot mode. Keep holding the power button down and as described in the link, your screen will flicker....keep holding it down (seems like a long time) until the Calibration screen comes up. I used a stylus from my Palm to touch the dots (you can use a pencil)...Once the screen was re-calibrated, the unit works fine.
