Erratic and Erroneous HRM Data 45 min into run

After enjoying a 305 for four years, I recently upgraded to a 310xt. Quite often, about 45 to 50 minutes into a run, the heart rate spikes and I get usually high, but very erratic and erroneous readings for the rest of the run. This is very annoying and destroys some of my training goals. Some of these threads suggested the was the new, premium, soft heart rate strap. So I switched to my older original strap. Which solved the problem for about a week. But know I'm having the same problem with that one. (I've attached two typical runs, one with each strap.) I don't have this problem with the 305. Do the watches receive/process the data from the strap differently? Is there something else I can do to fix the problem, or is the 310xt flawed? Help!
  • The watches should receive and record the exact same data from the strap. You could try running with both watches connected to the same monitor. If the data is erratic, it should be wrong in the activities recorded by both units.

I'm having a similar problem. My 310xt used to signal what seemed to be accurate heart rates but recently my watch reads up and over 200 and more. My max heart rate is 170. My very basic polar hrm still registers correctly.
    What is the problem?

    Me too

The exact same thing - into the run I'm getting 220 or 205 and so on. Does anyone have any idea why?

I have my first erroneous HRM display on my Oregon300 FW3.90 with HRM1B/G

  • The same for me too!!

Why it happens?? Also for me, running it goes to 190 bps and stays there until I move the belt even if the belt is pre-wet o wet by my swear..I thought it could be an interference with the IPOD ear plug wire, which passes in front of the belt...but its not so!! Any suggestion?

I've just seen this problem for the first time today. Check out my results from Garmin Connect...

similar issue, is there something wrong with the watch or my heart!?

Anyone ever figure this out? I also have a 310xt (latest firmware), had it for almost a year now. The first half of my run is stead/flat. But, without fail, after I turn around on my run, my heart rate will spike up to 190 or higher. On my last run, my heart rate spiked to 230, but I felt fine. I would have to stop and walk to bring my heart rate down, but as soon as I started running again, my heart rate would shoot right back up to 200. I gave up trying to get my heart rate down, and continued running at an avg heart rate of 200 for the rest of my 50' run.

I did notice that my heart rate would spike when the elevation changed. The total elevation change of my last run was 100ft. When I turned around, I was running slightly down hill for 2.5 miles, this is around the same time my heart rate would spike, and become erratic between 190-230.

Natural tendency for the heart to spike like that? Defect in the software? Defect in the HRM? Do I need to see a cardiologist?

Best solution is to go to the old hard strap, or perhaps the very latest generation of HRM straps that Garmin supplies.
  • Excessively high heart rate

I have the 310XT which now also shows an excessively high heart rate, mainly with running. I tightened the strap which did not help. Last time I ran with two straps, my 310 and a polar which showed up to a 40 beat discordancy. Obviously, I can't trust the numbers anymore and it messes up the training goals. I am going to try cleaning the contacts with some other solutions to see if that helps. Wearing it backwards might be an option. It has nothing to do with the amount of charge in the watch itself. I haven't seen an upgrade that addresses this. Any fixes out there?
