Training Effect is not recorded on the Training Effect page under Reports in Connect

I'm using an Instinct 3 Tactical and while the Training Effect is recorded with each activity performed, there is no history being logged on the actual Training Effect page under Reports in Connect.

In addition, am I understanding it correctly that the Hiking activity does not record VO2 max but running and walking do?  That seems very illogical.

Do you mean the page at https://connect.garmin.com/app/report/62/running/last_four_weeks ? That one is for running only. There is another one for cycling. I do have data from my Instinct 3 in both of them. If you do not have the data, while you logged some running (or cycling) activities, then one of possible reasons might be a corrupted watch/account association. You can try to Remove and Add a Device From the Garmin Connect App | Garmin Customer Support, log an activity, sync, and see whether it helped.

Yes that's correct, and oppositely to your opinion, I'd tell it is very logical. At hiking there are many more factors than at running (or at walking on a flat terrain) influencing the speed and HR, so it would be very diffult to make any meaningfully accurate estimate. For the same reason VO2max value at trail running is optional only, although there are less external factors than at hiking, and the speed helps getting it slightly easier to estimate too.

If you really want VO2max from your hiking, record it as walking or trail running, just do not expect any meaningful results. Once recorded, you can change the activity type to Hiking, in Garmin Connect, it won't remove the VO2max (if it was already detected).

  • Thanks for the reply!  Yes, that is the page I'm referring to and since I do not run and no longer cycle then that would explain it.  However, every activity I'm performing otherwise records a Training Effect status and a score 1-5 on its Activity page.  I'm not sure the point of recording that and then not carrying it over to the Training Effect Report page.  At least give us a centralized reporting page for Training Effect not related to Running/Cycling if they are going to record it.  It's a confusing user experience to go halfway with that.

Noted on VO2.  I will try what you said and record my hikes as walks.  What I'm currently recording is sort of in a gray area between the two anyway.  It's basically a 1-mile traverse with 90 ft of elevation change (descent) on the walk out and then the same 90 ft of elevation change (ascent) on the way back.  I have an optional, additional 2/10 of a mile I can tack on that has another 90 ft of up/down elevation to it if I want to get my heart rate up a bit more.
