Trimming activity messes up the stats for it on Garmin Connect

Whenever I trim an activity it messes up some of the important stats for that activity, thus removing a lot of the point of recording it on Garmin Connect!

A couple of examples:

-I just trimmed about a minute off the end of a swim activity as I'd not stopped my forerunner for a while at the end of it, and my "average heart rate" for the activity went DOWN despite that during that trimmed minute I was just resting and my heart rate had dropped back down to normal. This is clearly wrong - if anything the ave heart rate should have increased slightly.

- I often trim a few seconds off the end of cycling activities imported from Zwift, so that the activity ends as soon as I stopped pedaling rather than only after I've dismounted and gone over to my laptop to press stop (otherwise the average RPM, watts power etc would be inaccurate). However, doing this always makes the "elevation gain" reduce massivley to a very incorrect figure, and also the calorie count for the activity usually disappears from Garmin Connect entirely.

Is this a known bug in Garmin Connect? It basically makes using trim entirely worthless if so.

  • That is working as intended when you edit/trim activities as it will adjust specific data. I'm linking a support article that has some information about trimming activities in Connect.

Can I Crop or Trim a Timed Activity Using Garmin Connect?

  • Hi. thank you for your quick reply but I think you must have misunderstood my issue:

My issue is not that trimming the activity adjusts the data (it should do of course), it's that it does it (sometimes wildly) incorrectly:

    - In my first (swimming) example, the trim makes the average heart rate over the activity decrease even though in the final minute that I trimmed away my heart rate was much lower than the average during the activity. This must be wrong:- the average should increase not decrease as a result of the trim.

    - In my second (Zwift) example, trimming just a few seconds off the end of the activity can reduce the total elevation gain showing for the activity by around a hundred metres! One or two metres gain is believable over those few seconds, but c100m is clearly wrong! Also, the calories figure should reduce sllghtly, not become zero which it does each time.

If helpful, I could provide screenshots of the activites before and after trimming, and highlight the stats that have become clearly incorrect as a result of the trimming?

  • HI, could you let me know whether you're looking into this as per my 2nd message below?

    Thanks, Rich

  • This has been a problem for years.

Garmin says "it's working as intended" which means they are NOT going to look into it, fix it, or anything else.

Stop trimming, you are just making the stats worse.
