Shimano Di2 1x time-in-gear shows 00:00:00 / NaN% despite valid shifting data

Issue:
Shimano Di2 1x shifting data is not displayed correctly by Garmin.

The Edge 1050 records and displays the number of shifts, so shifting events are clearly being recorded. However, gear usage / time-in-gear does not work correctly for Shimano Di2 1x drivetrains.

In Garmin Connect Web and Garmin Connect Mobile, the shifting view shows 00:00:00 and NaN% for gear usage / time-in-gear. The same problem is also visible on the Edge 1050 itself.

This has been an issue for me ever since Garmin introduced shifting data support. It has never worked correctly for my Shimano Di2 1x setups in Garmin’s own views.

Affected 1x setups:

Setup 1 – Gravel bike:
- Shimano Di2 1x
- Front chainring: 46T
- Cassette: 10–51
- Shifters: Shimano GRX Di2
- Rear derailleur: Shimano XTR Di2

Setup 2 – MTB:
- Shimano Di2 1x
- Front chainring: 36T
- Cassette: 10–51
- Shifters: Shimano XTR Di2
- Rear derailleur: Shimano XTR Di2

Working comparison:

Road bike:
- Shimano Di2 2x
- Front chainrings: 52/36
- Cassette: 11–34
- Full Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset

Expected result:
Garmin Edge and Garmin Connect should display gear usage / time-in-gear correctly for Shimano Di2 1x drivetrains.

For a 1x drivetrain, Garmin should be able to calculate and display rear sprocket usage based on the recorded Di2 shifting data and configured chainring/cassette setup.

Actual result:
For Shimano Di2 1x:
- Shift count is available
- Gear usage / time-in-gear is not displayed correctly
- Garmin Connect shows 00:00:00
- Garmin Connect shows NaN%
- The issue occurs both on the Edge 1050 and in Garmin Connect Web/Mobile

For Shimano Di2 2x:
- Gear usage / time-in-gear works correctly
- Front chainring and rear sprocket usage are displayed as expected

Steps to reproduce:
1. Pair a Garmin Edge 1050 with a Shimano Di2 1x drivetrain.
2. Configure the drivetrain as 1x with the correct front chainring and cassette.
3. Record an activity with multiple gear shifts.
4. Save and upload the activity to Garmin Connect.
5. Open the activity on the Edge 1050, Garmin Connect Web, or Garmin Connect Mobile.
6. Open the shifting / gear data view.
7. Observe that the number of shifts is available, but gear usage / time-in-gear is missing or displayed as 00:00:00 / NaN%.

Additional comparison:
The same Shimano Di2 1x activity data can be displayed correctly on axs.sram.com, including gear usage, even though the drivetrain is Shimano Di2 and not SRAM AXS.

This suggests that the FIT/activity data contains usable shifting information and that the issue is likely in Garmin’s interpretation, calculation, or display of Shimano Di2 1x gear usage.

Why this looks like a Garmin bug:
This does not look like a sensor pairing issue, since Garmin records the number of shifts correctly.

It also does not appear to be limited to one specific bike or component combination, since I can reproduce it on two separate Shimano Di2 1x setups:
- Gravel bike with GRX Di2 shifters and XTR Di2 rear derailleur
- MTB with XTR Di2 shifters and XTR Di2 rear derailleur

A Shimano Di2 2x road bike works correctly in Garmin Connect.

The failure seems to happen specifically when Garmin tries to calculate or display gear usage / time-in-gear for Shimano Di2 1x drivetrains.
