Ultra run - use more than one pair of shoes in a single activity

It seems Garmin has not solved the problem of adding e.g. two pairs of shoes (gear) to a single running activity and assign the correct milage to each pair of shoes.

So in my case a 86k run where I did 55k with one pair and 31k with another pair because I had to change them. I don't want to change the activity type from trail run to something else.

Is there a way Garmin can take this as a feature request? I've seen an entry which is already six years old but the issue still persists. Disappointed

  • You can always submit a feature request like this to Garmin.com/ideas for consideration!

  • I don't want to change the activity type from trail run to something else.

You can simply change Ultra Trail to Ultra Trail, no need to change to something else. That will allow you having a single Multisport activity with two legs of ultra trail, and each with the correct mileage.

  • But this will split the single activity into two. So my 86k race becomes a 54k and a 31k. So e.g. when you search for runs >75k this one will not show up. Disappointed

If I change it from Trail running to Ultra running Garmin connect just throws errors around and it says it will loose the trail specific data fields.

  • That message is always displayed when you switch activity type. It usually never affects anything unless you change between two very different types.

  • So e.g. when you search for runs >75k this one will not show up.

It will still show up if you search for multisport > 75k.

If I change it from Trail running to Ultra running Garmin connect just throws errors

You do not have to change the activity to a different sport. "Change" it to the same one.

Using Multisport is one of the very few possibilities you currently have. The only other option I can imagine, is removing both pairs of shoes from the Gear of that activity, and creating two dummy manual activities of the respective distances, and adding the gear to them instead. You could use a completely different sport (i.e. walking, or indoors cycling, or whatever else) in order to avoid messing up your Running stats.

Other than that, as already written, you can suggest your request to Garmin at Share Ideas | Garmin, but I am afraid you may never see it implemented, unless requested by hundreds or thousands of other users (which is unlikely).

  • +1 on this request. I ran an 85-mile trail race a couple weeks ago and switched shoes at mile 50. Same problem — both pairs show 85 miles for that activity when they should show 50 and 35 respectively.

My workaround has been to keep both shoes assigned to the activity but increase the max mileage limit on each pair to account for the extra miles they didn't actually accumulate. I add a note explaining the adjustment. It's less disruptive than converting to a multisport activity (which breaks the single-activity record and affects search/filters), but it's still a hack.

What I'd love to see in Garmin Connect: when multiple shoes are assigned to a single activity, let the user manually enter a mileage split for each pair rather than applying the full activity distance to all of them. This seems like it would be a straightforward addition to the existing gear UI.

I've also submitted this via garmin.com/ideas.
