HR Zone on Activity Summary

Hi, this is probably a noddy question; but how do I interpret the HR Zone info on the activity summary?

the ride was 1hr, 20mins and if my summary says;

Avg HR 156bpm 84% 3.5z
Max HR 179bpm 97% 5.5z

what does 3.5z and 5.5z mean? :confused:

Thanks,
Gibbo
  • In Garmin Connect you can define heart rate zones which relate to how hard you are working. They start off at default settings which you can change by going into the 'settings' section (top right of the screen next to help). The number before the decimal point is which zone you are in and the number after the decimal point is how far into the zone you are which goes up to 5.

    It depends on the Training Zones settings. If you have zone 3 to be from 78% to 90% (of your Max HR) then 3.5z would be equivalent to 84% (half way into zone 3). If you have zone 5 set to 94% to 100% (of your Max HR) then 5.5z would be equivalent to 97% (half way into zone 5).

    Thanks for the replies, but I am bit confused now about the decimals as the answers seem to provide two different descriptions so I have one more question please;

    does 3.5z mean I am halfway to zone four (as in .5 being half) or am I at the top of zone 3 and the next decimal will take me over?

    worked it out for myself - it is decimal; therefore .5 is half (which is logical)
