Inaccurate Calculation in Chronic Load

Really enjoying referring to garmin's analysis to track my workout.

However there seems to be a with calculating chronic load.

Acute load seems fine but other parameters related with chronic load are not being updated too.

the value is fixed in 219 except for the drop to 100 on one day.

This is not actuallay a bug on web since same thing happens on my android device and web

but there were no proper category for bugs on metric so I posted here.

  • Which watch is it? Older watches without the HRV Status or watches with older firmware require a recent VO2max update, and newer watches need recent HRV Status. Though, it is strange that the Acute TL does update. In your pace I'd look up the forum for your specific watch model, and/or contact the Support.

  • At least on my Forerunner 965, there's a limit on how low the chronic load goes. For me that's also 219, but I'm not sure if that bottom limit is calculated from some other metrics. When your "real" chronic load goes back above the limit, then the shown chronic load starts updating again.

I think Garmin does it this way so that the calculated load ratio is more useful if you are sick for some time etc, as you then see the load ratio based on a "minimum recommended load" instead of the real 4-week average that has dropped a lot. (And if chronic load could drop to 1 for example, then doing a single short base run could give you a load ratio of 60, which would be completely useless information.)

  • you then see the load ratio based on a "minimum recommended load" instead of the real 4-week average

Yes, I think that's indeed accurate. I checked couple of years of the history of my Training Status. I do not have many periods with low Chronic Load, but the lowest value I found a year ago, is also 219, so it looks like it is really the lowest possible Chronic TL.

  • thanks to you all. mine is instinct 2 and supports HRV status. I'll contact the support and update when it is resolved.

Frankly, it does not look like there is anything that needs to be resolved. It looks like it works as designed - as  correctly spotted, the Chronic Training Load cannot drop under 219, and since your ATL was and still is pretty low, you just have to wait a few days more before the CTL rises high enough to surpass the 219

  • I agree with your opinion, but the narrow drop to 100 makes me more concerned about the system bug. however I'll wait for 1 more week for CL to climb and report back here
