in order to get point by point driving directions, which i believe are called routeable roads, i need to install garmin city nav correct?

i cannot install this without a memory card because its too big to fit with what came bundled with my gps because its just a bit bigger than what i have left in space on the gps. is there something i can ditch off my GPS to make it fit? once i do get it in there it'll just show up or do i have to do something different?

if i want to use the birds eye i have to use the 24k maps right?
  • The short answer is no. The long answer I started to type out but decided it was not worth my time typing and your time reading. You may be able to find a way using GmapTool, MapSetToolkit, and cgpsmapper to do what you’re trying to do but it would be no where worth your time. Second, odds are you will screw up the internal maps which on that model you paid an extra $100 to get internally. A 2gb microsd card is $10 and will hold the entire North America NT maps with 600mb to spare.

If you are hell-bent on screwing up your unit then I would start with GMapTool and go from there; but I am not even sure if you can access the partition on that unit’s internal memory to get to the maps. If it’s possible to access that image, I would be very shocked. If you do get in please send me a PM here because I am curious how many mapsets are in the base topo on the units they are selling now. My copy of 2008 topo has something like 7000 map segments, which is way too many to load into the GPS as there is a 2025-4000 segment limit in units. What I think Garmin did was combine these map segments for the units they are selling with internal maps. I could use the tool combinemaps to merge map segiments but it strips out the DEM data, which is something I do not want to do. The solution would be for Garmin to release a patch to be able to resize map segments in mapsource like Magellan has in their map programs.

If you get into the devices internal memory, look for GMAPSUPP.img, GMAPSUP2.img or GMAPPROM.IMG which are files that will contain your maps. Again, I strongly advise going and spending the $10 for a 2gb card and not screwing around but that’s your choice.

    Good luck!

EDIT: Christ man, its $6.72 for a 2gb card! (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JLP5UK) Don't screw up your nice new unit.
