Gear tracking - new grouping feature

Dear Garmin,

Huge thanks for finally introducing gear grouping and auto assign based on activity type!

I’ve been waiting years for this update, and it’s exactly what I needed.

Please send my love to the team that made this happen and got it into production.

Keep up the great work! love-you gesture

  • Several new "gear" features, however, there doesn't seem to be a way to bulk add gear to past activities. Now that bike components can be grouped with specific bikes, I'd like to add them... but I won't be manually adding components to hundreds of past activities.

  • They also fixed a few UX issues that I've been complaining about for years (I'm under no illusions that it had anything to do with my complaints):

    - the gear list (to assign/remove gear to/from an activity) is finally in alphabetical order, instead of some weird random-ish order

    - the gear tab in an activity always has a button to edit gear (assign/remove gear to/from an activity), even when there's already gear assigned to the activity

I still think that for shoes and running activities, only 1 pair of shoes should be selectable (which covers by far the most common use case, and would save a tap or 2, depending on how it's done), as opposed to having to select new shoes and unselect the existing shoes when you want to change shoes for an activity. I get why it's like that (to handle the case of things like cycling activities where it's valid to have multiple selected items of gear).

    Still great to see improvements!

Indeed, currently, I do not see it in Garmin Connect Web, but you can bulk add gear to old activities of selected categories or subcategories, with the phone app.

  • Actually, you can. Go to 'Add a new component,' set the date and default activity, and check 'Add to old activities matching the activity type.

  • When I try that, it actually doesn't add any "mileage" to the components, so maybe it only adds usage moving forward from that point?

And I'd rather not attach gear to an activity, but rather a specific bike, since I have three that could all be under the "Road cycling" activity.

I think ideally, I would be happy with being able to bulk select activities, and simply add gear to everything selected.

If you own a watch (or Edge) supporting the new Gear features (like for example Instinct 3, Fenix 8, and others), then you can simply create several copies of the Bike activity profile, and assign a different gear in each of them, on the watch in the activity settings. Then, when going for a ride, you start the Bike activity clone with the matching gear.
