According to the help box re Elevation correction, the default is disabled for devices with barometric altimeters as those should be accurate. I have an Edge 305 with the barometric altimeter. For a ride I did yesterday, with elevation correction disabled, it shows Gain 992, Loss 987, Min elevation 1059, Max elevation 1289. With correction enabled the respective numbers are 422, 423, 1094, 1260. Other rides show similar differences. So if the barometric altimeter is supposed to be accurate & the correction with data from professional surveys is supposed to be accurate, why the discrepancy?
Hmm, this is exactly the problem I am dealing with. The altitude is not quite stable, it changes from -100 ft to +30 ft within less than 1 mile running. This is significant, since it should be more or less flat. I am wondering weather or not it takes into account the altitudes for the calculation of the distance. If it does then the distance is too far and so is my average speed. If I enable the 'elevation correction' then the altitudes seem to be more realistic, but my running data doesn't change. So is my data reliable?
I have a similar problem with my foretrex 401 which has barometer functionality.
Issue #1: When I import my tracks to Garmin Connect, the elevation correction is enabled by default (according to Garmin Connect's help page, this should be disabled for devices with barometers built-in). But that's easily alleviated by disabling the correction.
Issue #2: When the data is imported to Google Earth, the track altitudes are overridden to the terrain's geography. In the case of ground activities, it's not biggie and likely even desirable. However for flying activities, this defeats the whole purpose of tracking...
I assume issue 2 is caused by issue 1. I've edited the kml file exported from Connect and the <altitudeMode> attribute is set to clampToGround, where it should be set to absolute, at least for my flying purposes.
Can anyone suggest if there's a setting in Connect that will allow to select the altitude mode for kml file exports? I don't want to have to edit each and every file manually before importing to Earth.
Well, 6 months later I still haven't solved the problem. Every track log I upload to Garmin Connect gets automatically "corrected" to the terrain. It doesn't matter if I enable or disable the elevation correction in Connect, it still does the correction. Same for the map using the Earth view. Come on Garmin, can we get some help here?
