Discrepancy in steps summary vs. data

Garmin summary report is showing 737 steps yet the daily timeline only shows 695. Where is the discrepancy in data coming from? When the steps are synced to apple health it also only shows 695 steps. Trying to understand why the summary report would show more. This is happening on Web as well as the connect app.

  • When you sync a few more times, do the numbers match up?

  • No it’s constantly off by 42 steps every time I sync:

  • That can happen for example when you change the time zone, or change the time on the watch or on the phone manually, and in similar cases, where there is some time discrepancy between the devices. It should get back into sync the next day again. Or do you experience the difference of 42 steps since several days?

  • It seems to be syncing today. That’s interesting because I never adjusted the time on the watch or the phone at all yesterday. Shrugmale sign️

  • It could happen also due to a crash, or a firmware update combined with a sync failure.

  • Hi, I’ve been seeing the exact same thing on my account. When looking at steps for a given day in Garmin Connect, the timeline graph (final cumulative value for the period 11:45-11:59) is sometimes lower than the total daily step count.

Similarly, Apple Health matches the timeline (lower) value, not the higher daily summary total in Garmin — so there’s a discrepancy between the two.

It doesn’t happen every day, but intermittently — most days everything lines up, but occasionally there’s a small gap like this.

I’ve raised it with Garmin support and they’ve said it appears to affect a small minority of users and is currently being investigated.

Like you, I haven’t changed time zones or anything like that, so it doesn’t seem to be a simple sync/time issue. It’s quite difficult to explain and I haven’t been able to pinpoint a cause.

Are you still noticing it happening on some days, or was it just a one-off?

  • Hi, I am experiencing the exact same thing as the post author. I initially thought along the same lines (time sync / timezone / sync issues), but in my case it doesn’t seem to fit that pattern at all.

I’ve noticed this intermittently over a long period (months rather than just a single day), and it still happens even when:

    • Time/date are set to automatic
    • Devices and phone are fully in sync
    • No timezone changes
    • No obvious crashes or failed syncs

I also have multiple Garmin devices, so I wondered if it could be related to TrueUp, but that seems to be working correctly and consistently.

What’s interesting is that the discrepancy is always in the same direction:

    • Daily total is higher
    • Timeline (final cumulative value) is lower
    • data imported to Apple Health matches the timeline value

So it feels less like a one-off sync issue and more like two slightly different “versions” of step data being used.

I’ve raised it with Garmin support and they’ve said it appears to affect a small minority of users and is currently being investigated, but no explanation yet.

Have you come across anything like this before, where the summary total and timeline don’t quite align like this? Could there be any other explanation, or is it an unexplainable bug?

  • So far, it seems to have only impacted that single day from what I can see.
