BaseCamp software

Got my first GPS in January .... an etrex vista h. These things are amazing. I can't believe the math that goes on inside.

I had a lot of trouble finding software to transfer and read data on my laptop. The manual was no help at all. I ran across the Map Center software by accident. That was pretty good. Then my laptop died. (Sad face)

So today was time to load Map Center on the new laptop. But the Garmin site warned not to. Could damage my GPS. Instead downloaded BaseCamp. I really really like it!

Thank you Garmin.

    Map Center -- ???

Navigating the Garmin site is feeble. I finally figured out how to access forums by using the URL. Damned if I can find the links.

Loaded Base Camp on the laptop today, Oregon 450. Waiting for Garmin to send me the email code for the 10% purchase discount. I want to buy some maps and want the 10%. I wonder if Easter weekend bears on the turnaround for registration?

My Garmin has a thermometer option for Celsius or Fahrenheit, but I see no thermometer display.

Altimeter calibration. I know my elevation . . . So is the "calibration" in Feet? Metres? Cubits?

There's a SD slot under the batteries -- No mention in the "manual."

I'm available and qualified to revise/edit the manual. (Ph.D. in English/Linguistics w/ work experience in publishing)

    Call me, eh?

    Haha!
I've a new eTrex Vista HCx, and the manual with it was pretty lame.
I ran across a manual for an eTrex "C" model which was much more complete (but of course, did not have info specific the the 'Vista', "H", or "x"). The data is out there, you just have to DIG for it.

BTW, you sure it wasnt MapSource instead of Map Center? I generally prefer Mapsource over Basecamp, but each has features the other doesnt, so YMMV.

ETA: my "perfect" verbal score on the SAT back in the '80's is what saved my overall from my math score. Language counts!

Pages 20, 37 and 39 in the manual tell you most of what you need to now about the 'microSD' card slot under the batteries. If you had checked index page 44 you would have found it. Then again, referring to it as an 'SD' slot may have been the source of your frustrations.

The "thermometer" option is actually for a water temperature sensor. Although the manual mentions it on page 30 it certainly isn't very clear and the website seems to be missing info about any such sensor that works with this unit. They do mention the GST 10 but that doesn't work with the Oregon.

The altimeter is 'barometric' (reads atmospheric pressure) and therefore needs calibration every once in a while for accuracy. Also, the compass is 'magnetic' and also needs calibration once in a while for accuracy. I suggest, if you are going to rely on either of those two features, you calibrate them before each use.

For someone with a "Ph.D. in English/Linguistics" you don't seem to read very well. :D I will agree with you though that the manuals could use some work.

I also agree that a link to these forums should be provided from the web site. If it's there I can't find it either. I only found the forums after searching Google for something else.

I've also requested dedicated hardware forums for devices other than the fitness ones but still nothing. The "Water Cooler' is not the place to discuss these issues.

Indeed, I had my first garmin for weeks before I found these forums. In fact, I found at least 3 other forums talking about garmins before I found the garmin.com one.

And yes, it would be nice to have device-specific forums for the 95% of us who use GPS for things other than jogging and cycling.

    just sayin'
