How to set up a Run workout to send a beacon

I created a Run workout as 7 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking to help in recovering from Sciatica nerve issue. Is there a way to set this up so it sends a beacon through Strava so my wife can track it? If I just choose Run when going out it will do this automatically but I have done a couple of the workouts and it doesn't send the beacon.

  • LiveTrack is set to start automatically and send a Beacon. It doesn't seem to be doing this if run it as a "Workout" instead of just a regular run where I hit start and go. I set it up as a Workout so that I would get voice prompts when I had run the set time instead of having to be constantly checking my watch. I am notoriously bad at gauging how long I've run. I've tried this and keep overshooting how long I've run. I was hoping I was just maybe not seeing a setting for this somewhere.

  • Can you not start livetrack manually, in the cases where it doesn't start automatically?

Open the Connect app on your phone, select ... More > Safety & Tracking > LiveTrack and tap the Start LiveTrack button under your device.

I have done a couple of the workouts and it doesn't send the beacon.

How exactly are you starting your workouts? Do you select the Run activity, then select Training > Workouts?

If so, I guess it's intentional on Garmin's part that LiveTrack won't automatically start if you follow a programmed workout.

  • They are under the Workout app on the watch. I created it as a Run workout so I just assumed it would work the same as starting a run. Apparently not the case. I'll try starting LiveTrack manually next time to see if that will work. If it's not possible then I will just adjust.

My watch is a Forerunner 955, for reference.

Hmm, I kinda figured you were using the Workout app on the watch, based on your description.

    Can you instead try:

    - Open the Run activity

    - Hold UP for the menu

    - Select Training > Workouts

    - Select the workout you want to follow

Can't guarantee it will work any differently in terms of auto starting livetrack, but it can't hurt to try.

  • That's kinda what I did. Last time I probably just went to the Workout and chose from there. This time I went to -Workout and scrolled down to -Run and chose the workout from there. Got to the same place you did above, just by a different path.

Thank you for your help. I mostly need to have my wife track my route as I am a cardiac athlete. She also has mental and physical health issues so she feels more comfortable knowing where I am if she needs me.

I truly appreciate everyone's help and advise here. This is a great group.
