Weird/Inaccurate Active Calorie Spike

I got back on the trainer, after a long time off, to start getting back in shape. In/Out calorie tracking is going to be important to me, but I'm seeing some weirdness that Garmin is throwing in to the mix.

Each of the last two days, I've done my trainer ride and Active Calories has tracked well during and just after the ride, both on my watch (Venu 2S, which I'm using to broadcast HR to my laptop, which is running Zwift) and online (phone app and web).

Sometime thereafter, however, I see a big bump in Active Calories (400+ each of the last two days) on the app/web. This is not reflected on my watch, until I sync, at which time it adds those phantom Active Calories and depicts them as a large spike on the calorie graph on my watch (see pic). I'm not seeing multiple activities logged on my Garmin calendar, so I don't think that it's double-dipping by pulling in the same activity from difference sources (like Strava and Garmin, both of which are syncing with Zwift). Any idea where these calories are coming from?

  • I have been experiencing the same thing since Wednesday. Seems to me like it’s pulling the calories from the watch and from the activity imported by Zwift

  • Other users reported the duplication of Calories when using two data sources, so it looks like the Physio TrueUp does not work correctly due to a recent bug. To work around it, while waiting for the fix, you'd either have to remove the watch from your wrist while riding the home trainer, or connect the trainer to your watch, disconnect Zwift from Garmin Connect, and record the ride with the watch.

  • Lot of users have the same issue (me included). You can see some posts on Reddit here and here.

The crazy thing is: I wrote to support about it, and they basically replied that I should keep my watch off during indoor bike training. That seems pretty crazy to me, to be honest. They are not mentioning a bug, or a fix in the future. Just: yes, you have to keep your watch off.

A €600 watch, everything always worked fine before, and they keep saying it’s not an issue? Come on.

  • Same error here since 5/6 days, really annoying. Also my GF has the same error and she is also paying also for the nutrition plan monthly.

Sent an email to the support of garmin and they said to "remove your watch while cycling" (yeah for real, I paid > 1k€ over Garmin devices and they suggest me to leave them home).

The double counting happens both from Forerunner Watch + Zwift but the even worst between their devices (like Forerunner Watch + Edge on bike).
