I'm new - Help. Loading Topo 24K (dvd) to Oregon 450

I bought an Oregon 450 and it's nice, a little too nice. First, no manual in the box. Had to download one from Garmin. Second, paid $129 for the DVD of Topo 24K West, loaded it to the PC, and Basecamp opens and I can view everthing nicely.

Now, I can't see any topography in my 450 in the 100k mode. From my understanding, buying this 24K should work on the 450, yes? Am I missing something? How do I load this to the 450? I can't find any documentation to tell me what to do.... so here I am.

Help.

    Unlocked?

Did you "unlock" the map in your map updates?

I'm new too, like 30 hrs since purchase. Looking at the Topo for the same unit. I can navigate the unit pretty well, but the "manual" is feeble.

Unit has a "farenheit/celcius" option. So where's the thermometer? I don't see a discussion at all in the "manual."

There are "lock/unlock" arrows in the battery compartment -- and I finally found the SD port. Lock/Unlock what?

"Calibrate altimeter" -- there's a "readout" screen w/ numbers and options. So, feet? Metres? Cubits?

Web site is difficult to navigate. Documentation is mediocre. Garmin needs to hire some tech writer types who understand layout and documentation.

Did you "unlock" your map? -- whatever that means . . . ???

Just got my Oregon 450 and reading through the posts on this device and thought I could help here a bit. Of course you might have figured these things out by now.

To load the Topo 24K West from the computer to the Oregon 450 you need MapInstall. If it didn't install when you installed the maps you can get it using one of the two links below.

    Mac version here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3825

    Windows version here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291

The lock/unlock arrows in the battery compartment are for the microSD card slot. You can add memory to the GPS unit in the form of microSD cards. They go into the slot and are locked in place by sliding the metal cover which pops up when not locked.
