No marathon plans?

I have previously used Garmin marathon plans, but they seem to have been removed? (I have a Forerunner 45)

Coach plans only go up to half-marathon, and the previous menu "Training Plans" where the standard training plans lived has disappeared??

This a major gap - how can Garmin NOT have a marathon plan??

COACH PLANS MENU

NO TRAINING PLANS OPTION ANYMORE?

  • In Garmin Connect Web. Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans > Find a Plan > Browse All Plans > Running. You should see 6 plans for marathon.

Since you have the Forerunner 45, this might be hidden.

You can try the direct link - https://connect.garmin.com/app/training-plan?type=Running

  • Perfect - these are exactly what I was looking for.. weird that they are hidden, but thanks for your reply - amazing knowledge!

  • But those aren't the Coach plans! In the past, there were Coach plans with Jeff, Greg, and Amy up to marathon distance.

Those were always only for distances up to a half marathon. Marathon plans were always only self-managed.

I think it's because Garmin has been pushing the newer plans for a while: first Garmin Coach (with a plan from a real human coach - i.e. Greg, Jeff and Amy), and the even newer Garmin Run Coach (Garmin's adaptive training plan).

In fact iirc, Garmin was hiding even the plans from Greg, Jeff, and Amy for a while, but at some point they reversed that decision.

Note that Garmin Run Coach (which is not supported by your FR45) actually does support the marathon distance. My FR955 supports Garmin Run Coach, and when I take the same steps as you described in your post, I see additional options for "Marathon" and "Other" distances, but if I choose either of those options, I only have the choice of Garmin Run Coach and not the human coaches. For the 5k, 10k, and half marathon distances, I have the choice of human coaches or Garmin Run Coach (which again is not available for you.)

This is a long way of explaining why Garmin isn't showing *you* the marathon distance by default, unless you select Browse All Plans to reveal the super-old self-guided / static plans. I think either Garmin didn't consider the user experience for such old watches, or they don't mind if it's that way because they're hoping it will nudge some users to upgrade.

Btw, these self-guided plans aren't even available in the Connect app, they're only on the website. Further evidence that Garmin really wants to push people towards the newer plans ("human coaches" or adaptive plans).

It's not that I don't want to believe you, but what is that screenshot supposed to prove exactly? Unless I'm mistaken, none of the text in the screenshot refers to a "full marathon", "marathon", or even any race distance at all. May as well use the same screenshot to "prove" that the Garmin ("human") Coach plans also supported 50k, 100k, and 24 hour races.

Otoh, 2 years ago, ppl were complaining that there's no full marathon Garmin Coach plan:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/18r42jk/why_isnt_there_a_full_marathon_coaching_on_garmin/

I'm guessing this was before the newer Garmin Run Coach adaptive plan existed, which does support the full marathon.

Not a single comment in that thread says that Garmin Coach previously supported the full marathon (on the contrary several people say it was never supported), so none of them remember it like you did.

Assuming they were right, the only remaining possibility is that Garmin subsequently added the full marathon distance to Garmin Coach (after not originally having it, for whatever mysterious reason), then even more mysteriously, reversed their decision and got rid of it. If that happened, I would expect to see outraged posts and comments on reddit, the Garmin forums, and DC Rainmaker's comment sections.

I also cannot find a single screenshot of Connect with text like "(Full) Marathon Plan with Coach Greg" but mysteriously there's plenty of screenshots from Connect of 5k, 10k, and half marathon plans with Coach Greg.
