705 - Can't upload long ride to GC

Former Member

This is the first problem i've encountered thus far. Normally everything uploads successfully, however this 1 ride (5 hours) refuses to upload to GC.

When going through the normal upload procedure, it doesn't even list there to be uploaded.

When I do a manual upload I just get
"An error occurred with your upload. Please try again"

I've tried copying the .tcx file to my Desktop and doing a manual upload, however it reports the same error.

The ride has been my longest since i've had this 705 and it is 6.5MB in size.
- I would think this wouldn't be the problem though.

The reason it may be so big is i've enabled the every second recording, however all my other shorter rides upload fine (2-3hours)

Please see attached the file incase you can spot any bugs in it.

- tried uploading the .tcx to this forum however it failed. had to zip it up

Help appreciated

I used FirstObject XML Editor to find and fix some bad trackpoints in the file and I'm attaching the fixed version. I suggest updating your firmware version to 3.1 (from 2.9). I couldn't do a manual upload to GC (I guess because it's too large). Try copying this back to your Edge 705 in the History folder (using the original name). Maybe doing an upload from the device will work.

    Thanks for that.

I've replaced the file in my history folder on the device and tried to upload it normally, however it said "no new activities to upload"

I then tried copying it to my desktop and doing a manual upload and it said
"An error occurred with your upload. Please try again"

I noticed that the original file was 6.5MB and now it's 13MB.
    - how did it get this large?
    - Will this be to large?

I have yet to upgrade my firmware to version 3.1

    Really need to upload this.

    Cheers

I found another bad trackpoint in the file. Here's the new version (2010-02-20-20-02-17_new.zip). I was able to upload this into http://www.runsaturday.com but not into GC. I guess GC doesn't like files with large number of trackpoints. The file got larger after my changes because the characters added for indentation made the file larger (I don't think this is the reason it won't upload into GC). I was also able to import this file into GTC and into SportTracks. I created a new version where I limited the number of trackpoints to 10,000 (using TCX Converter) and I was able to upload this to GC. I'm attaching this as well (2010-02-20T_0.zip).

Here's the attachment with the number of trackpoints reduced to 10,000.

ok somehow it's managed to upload, even though there was an error.

I now go to the activities list and can see it named as 'untitled'

It has the summary, however when i click on it for more details and view the map a pop-up box says 'Internal Server Error'

I can't even delete the entry, it says there is an error when I try to delete it.

I've e-mailed tech support as i'm not sure what's going on. Maybe they can delete it from the back-end.

Once this is deleted, I want to try and upload it again.

    SO ANNOYING!!

I ran into the same problem. Here's the response I received from Garmin Support:

    Dear Jonathan Eiseman,

I looked into the problem some more a found a issue that have seen with some activities. If they are over a certain size they will not load map data or delete. There is nothing we can do on our side to delete it from your account. You will have to wait for a fix to be sent out for Garmin Connect to allow you to delete that activity. I apologize for the inconvience and have a good day.

Try using the second version that I limited to 10,000 trackpoints (you will be able to upload that version). Why are you using "every second" recording?

    Thanks for that.

I tried uploading the custom one with 10,000 trackpoints however it said an error occured. I will try again though.

I have no idea why i'm using every second recording. Just decided to enable it. It's now staying disabled!

    Cheers

You're right. The upload fails because it says the activity was already uploaded. I renamed it and now it works. I'm attaching the renamed version. You can also see the activity here.

    Excellent. I see maps!

I'll try uploading that to my account now.

So what's the difference between the original and the one with 10,000 trackpoints?

I used TCX Converter to get it down to 10,000 track points. It filters the trackpoints to reduce the number. It sets a threshold value so that if the points are close together it can remove them. This is similar to what the 705 does when you set up "smart recording".
