Oregon 550 - custom maps

Hello,
I've got some problems. Can anyone help me?

The situation.
Got a brand new Garmin Oregon 550.
Using a Mac, running OSX Snow Tiger
Made software/firmware upgrade to latest stable version to the GPS through Garmin Web update.
GPS working pretty good.
Got some maps of my area (around my house). Map is a CTR 1:10.000 (these are detailed maps of Italy, where I live).
Original map is pretty large 2,1Mb TIFF. The file was converted on the mac to .Jpeg with size of 40Mb more or less
I "cutted" a smaller area of exactly 1024x1024, saved as a different .jpeg file to max quality.
I properly place the map on Google (needed some adjustment in position, height and general size).
Saved the place in KMZ format and transfered it on my gps in proper folder garmin/custommaps with a size of 1Mb.

Started the unit. at 1,2Km map was not to be seen. At closer look the map finally appeared (down to 800mt or similar).

Now the Problem. The map is properly set (cursor appeared right in the middle of it), BUT there was no map. A square of right size appeared, with horizontal stripes in different colours (mostly black) from one side to the opposite of the custom map.

Anyone has any suggestion???

    Problem solved !

No one told me that .Jpeg files have to be in RGB format.
I tried to upload some black/white files and they didn't work.
Had to convert them in Jpeg RGB.

    Now it works !
Hope someone els will find it useful!
