Should i consider leaving Garmin because sync with Strava will be impossible soon ?

Hi everyone,

There’s growing concern that syncing between Garmin and Strava could soon stop working. Strava has taken legal action against Garmin over data-sharing and patent issues, and Garmin has introduced new API rules that Strava may not accept.

Both companies say they don’t plan to block users, but the situation remains uncertain. Some users are already reporting sporadic sync failures.

It might be wise to plan alternatives — for example, exporting activities manually (such an hassle) or testing other ecosystems like Wahoo or Coros — in case the link between Garmin and Strava is disrupted.

  • Do you need Strava for anything?

I think it is better to leave Strava. I cancelled my Strava subscription last year when Strava changed how 3rd party apps can share the data. Strava was good to have because of the all 3rd party integrations but with that change everything changed so Strava is pretty useless now.

  • I don't have an use for Strava except for the social aspect and the mapping is better... though, truth be told, I only use the mapping when I am traveling

  • exporting activities manually (such an hassle)

An alternative to manual syncing might be to use a 3rd party site or app such as tapiriik.com or rungap (ios).

However, since the primary value of strava is as a social network, I don't think strava will be very useful if the average Garmin user cannot automatically sync activities the normal way. Most people, even tech savvy software devs, are not really interested in a syncing process that isn't 100% frictionless and automatic. I don't see Garmin users migrating en masse to another hardware platform, either (unless it's Apple Watch).

I think if Garmin and Strava really cut the cord, then it will be Strava that self-destructs, and not Garmin.

Otoh, I do know lots of runners who only run for likes, and even a lot of faster runners for whom Strava is kind of indispensable. So I'm not sure what they would do. Maybe log their runs manually on Strava, or maybe switch to AW.

Personally I wouldn't do anything until we know for sure that something drastic will happen.

  • What is Strava without your data from Garmin?. If Strava or Garmin closes that door, only Stava will suffer. I don't believe that is something they want to happen if they are truely going for IPO.

  • me and few friends will swap to Komot to share our rides etc (social part) and continue using garmin IF the automatic uploading stops
