Should Garmin support Auto-Lap triggered by GPS pins/POIs?

Hi everyone,

I recently submitted a feature request to Garmin: the ability for watches to automatically trigger laps or intermediate times when passing predefined GPS pins/POIs placed on the watch or in Garmin Connect when planning routes.

Why it would be useful:

  • No manual lap presses needed, even in cold or difficult conditions (e.g., gloves).

  • Precise tracking of custom segments, even with varying distances.

  • Average metrics per lap (speed, heart rate, power, etc.) calculated automatically.

  • Prevents missed intermediate times on longer courses.

I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • Would this feature be useful for your sport (paddling, running, cycling, triathlon)?

  • Do you think Garmin should implement it as a built-in function?

Please reply or give a “Kudos” if you support this idea — the more interest Garmin sees, the higher the chance they’ll prioritize it!

Thanks!

Miloš

  • You should rather post this request to the forum of your watch model, because the majority of recent watch models do already support Auto-Lap by Position, though that is designed to lap when you pass through the same position while passing multiple times on a circuit.

Otherwise, on some watch models, there is also the Auto-Lap by Timing Gates - that's exactly what you ask, though AFAIK it is available with running course only. Some details at Creating a Course in Garmin Connect | Garmin Customer Support
