Suggest GPS like GPSMAP 276C please

Friends:

Which of the new units are similar to the GPSMAP 276C? I want a unit for my car for use in off road situations where I can add WorldMap maps and set up routes on my laptop and download them to the unit, modify waypoints etc. with a screen about the size the 276C had. I also liked the trip computer in the 276C. Which ones are like that?

The people at Garmin suggest the Nuvi 500 series but the screen is really small.

The GPSMAP 378 is an option but is discontinued most places.

Thanks amigos!

378 and 478 are still available from Garmin.

I switched to a 640 and wish I had not, its not the same interface at all. A real step backwards in the manner in which I use the gps.

Garmin still shows them, but the reality is they've been discontinued. There are still GPSmap 478s available from some retailers but they're getting very hard to find. 478 refurbished units with full warranty show up on eBay from time to time. I just picked one up as a second unit.

Just the reason I picked up a second 478. Garmin's move to the Nuvi form factor and interface just does not work for me. I've got a Nuvi that's become a paperweight and I had a Zumo that I couldn't sell fast enough. The 276/376 and the 478 are the best consumer GPSr units Garmin has ever produced IMO. There are some map issues with the 378 that may be an issue. There's a link to the information on the 378 information page at the Garmin website.

Exact same situation here! Do I really need to buy an old 478 on EBay for $600 as a spare for my 276C? Is there really nothing out there now that could at least totally replace it, or better yet improve upon it - like non-Garmin proprietary memory, for instance? I don't use it on water, just on and off road.

"The people at Garmin suggest the Nuvi 500 series but the screen is really small."

    They suggested the Nuvi 500 to me too when I called. The 276 screen is 3 X 2.2" with 480 X 320 pixels; the Nuvi 500 screen is 2.8 X 2.1" with 320 X 240 pixels.

I visit Craigslist and area Pawn Shops for older Garmin units -- Street Pilot III Color, 2610, etc.... I've picked up several units with all cables and paperwork, including unlock codes.

Prices vary from $75 to $100.

Even found a neat little GPS V with all accessories and mapping. I use it as a Trip Master clip on for my Gold Wing, which has an overpriced and elementary built in Garmin GPS.

In several phone conversations with Garmin, they claim the SP III and 26XX series were some of the most reliable units sold by Garmin.

How about the new Garmin Nuvi 3790t that will be hitting the stores in July? It has a 4.3" diagonal screen with 800X480 pixels. Holds 1,000 waypoints. Seems to be much more advanced than the 276C, and certainly the old V, in a lot of ways. I wonder what my 276 can do that it can't. Probably won't be waterproof, though.

Probably fully customizable data fields on multiple screens for one. If you do the math, I think you'll find the 276/376/478 screen have a finer resolution. Quick change brightness and volume settings? I'm not a touch screen fan so that's an issue with the new stuff. Track management seems to be lacking in most of the new units. Only 1000 waypoints? I guess that's an improvement over the 3000 my 478 holds. :D Routes? Should be at least 50 with a generous via point allowance. XM weather, not the NavWeather, but the full meal deal NEXRAD.... OK that's 376/478 territory. :) Information availability by zoom level? Can't be without it. The ability to turn the "Auto Zoom" on or off, must have...... I could go on but there's a reason the GPSmap 2676/376/478s that come up on eBay don't last long and fetch near full retail..... They're that good.

--- Hmm...not sure how much I'll miss that. It will depend upon how easy it is to draw up the various points of info. that are found on the different 276 screens.

If you do the math, I think you'll find the 276/376/478 screen have a finer resolution.

--- The 3790 screen is bigger, though.

Quick change brightness and volume settings?

    -- Can't change b. and v. quickly on the 3790?

I'm not a touch screen fan so that's an issue with the new stuff.

--- I never had a touch screen - but the little buttons on the 176-276C do tend to get a bit creaky. Busted once too. They're not the best.

Track management seems to be lacking in most of the new units.

--- I find track management very bad on the 276C. I can hardly see the track.

Only 1000 waypoints? I guess that's an improvement over the 3000 my 478 holds. :D

--- Right, but at least it's an improvement over the 500 on the Nuvi 500. 1,000 should be enough for me. I've only accumulated 528 over the years.

Routes? Should be at least 50 with a generous via point allowance.

--- I very rarely use routes. How many routes will the 3790 hold anyway?

XM weather, not the NavWeather, but the full meal deal NEXRAD.... OK that's 376/478 territory. :)
Information availability by zoom level? Can't be without it.

--- You mean on the 3790 no more info is shown as you zoom in? The same info on large scale as small scale?

---A relatively minor complaint I did have with the 176/276 is that font size didn't increase at all as I zoomed in .

The ability to turn the "Auto Zoom" on or off, must have......

--- No problem for me. I don 't use that feature.

I could go on but there's a reason the GPSmap 2676/376/478s that come up on eBay don't last long and fetch near full retail..... They're that good.[/QUOTE

--- Well, for now my 276 is still chugging along. I still have my older 176 as a spare too. And my even older Garmin 2+, too.

--- There's a refurbished 478 for sale on Ebay right now in case you're interested. $600.

Thanks, but I've got 2 already in addition to my venerable old 376C....... They should last me as long as I need a GPS. :) My Nuvi is in the glove box of my wife's car... It's safe there. All the features I mentioned (and more), I use. I'm just not interested in the new MBA interface. Different strokes.... :)

Here's a discussion of the new Garmin 37__ series. Sounds promising.

Says that zooming in now shows details of all streets. Guess that was a flaw on their earlier Nuvis.
