Explore Activities gripes

Can the search on the 'Explore Activities' page please be changed. This is potentially the most useful page, but it falls short for me (and I am sure others) on the following two counts...

1/ The default location is always some random location that I don't want to know about. Surely it is not difficult to make this more relevant to me by looking at my last activity, my user preferences, or even my IP address?

2/ Why should we ever see the message "Sorry, search area is too broad. Please zoom in the map and try again."? This could be avoided by changing the search query from selecting all activities within the map extents to only selecting the most recent 20 activities.
  • Garmin says they've been working on both of these issues -- admittedly, for a long time now. I think someone said that they're planning on releasing a new upgrade to Garmin Connect in March, so maybe these will be fixed then (but I don't work for Garmin, so take this for what it's worth).

Thanks - I hope you are correct. The current maximum extents for the map search make it almost unusable. It would also be useful to include activities that intersect the search area, and not just those that start there. But one step at a time....

    activities missing

I have tried searching for my own activities using explore and nothing comes up. All my activities are open to the public, have activity type = Running, and event type = uncategorized. I don't give them a title so they are all "Untitled". When I search with no criteria at all, except my postcode where loads of my runs obviously start and also my username, I get no results.

I just changed one activity to have a title of "test" and now that comes up in my search! Why do "Untitled" activities get excluded from the search?

    +1
The MotionBased search was working well. I also liked the fact that I was able to map more than one activity to compare. It was useful to compare trails.
  • Explore Activities search useless

Explore Activities has made me very frustrated since the change. When I go out of town and am looking for a trail run to do in the area I don't know, searching Explore Activities has been useless. Because I don't know the area, I need to search a wider area (I don't normally know where the trails are where I have never been). In order to get any results I have to zoom in to something the size of a postage stamp and then it returns no results. Last week I was in Pasadena, California. I tried to search for a trail for an hour with no success. So I found a running store, went there and asked them. As far as I am concerned Garmin Connect is now only useful to log my own miles.

Before I could select an area, narrow by desired mileage and activity type and get some good options in seconds. Now I go elsewhere to try to find trails. Very unfortunate.

I have even looked in areas that I know the trails and have a very hard time getting any results. Like I said it is so useless now that I have stopped even trying.
  • Does Garmin WANT us to switch to another service?

For me the search for activities page is the most reason i purchased my Edge 705 and use Garmin Connect. All of a sudden it is possible to find NICE rides when travelling to new places.

Now the search has been useless for months - surely it cant be too hard to fix.

Is Garmin going to fix this or are they trying to get us all to switch to another service like Map my Ride for some reason like GC is too hard for them to run?

As an aside, assuming this problem does get fixed, would anyone else like to see a way for people to rate activities that they find and try so that as the database explodes there are more ways of filtering out the good stuff?
  • It is unusable and as a GIS programmer/admin I can't understand why it is so hard to fix. Just show the 10 (or any arbitrary number) most recent entries for the current map extents. Aaaaargh!
  • Just got a reply from Garmin on Facebook... I am just trying to find the definition of "near future" :)

Sorry for the delay, but yes, we do plan on having Explore fixed in the near future.
  • Explrore appears to be fixed

Working perfectly for me this morning.

    THANK YOU GARMIN

We can now find new rides again.

Now, how about user ratings to help us filter out the bad ones/repeats.....

    :):):)
